Ad hoc combined phd programs.

Many academic departments and programs in the Graduate School partner to offer formal combined PhDs. You can apply for a formal combined degree program in your original admission application to the Graduate School; or, if you are in your first year of study, by requesting to transfer from your current program to a combined program. Students may not transfer programs after they have advanced to candidacy. 

To explore the possibility of transferring to a combined degree program, you should consult with the directors of graduate studies in your current and prospective programs. You will need to identify an appropriate academic adviser in the new program; fill out the Departmental Transfer Form ; and prepare a one-to-two-page statement detailing your academic reasons for requesting the transfer and a timeline for completing the PhD. Requests to transfer to a combined program should be submitted to your current and prospective programs for review and approval, which is entirely at the discretion of the two departments/programs.  Programs then submit signed forms and materials to the Dean’s Office for final approval. These should be sent to [email protected] .

You also have the option to propose an ad hoc combined PhD for approval by both programs and the Graduate School. If you are in your first year of study and wish to explore the possibility of transferring to an ad hoc combined PhD, you should discuss your plans and proposal with the directors of graduate studies in your current and prospective programs. Students are not eligible to transfer into a combined degree after they have advanced to candidacy. You will need to identify an appropriate academic adviser in the new program and complete the Departmental Transfer Form . (Example: a student in Political Science applying to transfer to an ad hoc combined PhD with Religious Studies would fill out the form requesting a transfer from "Political Science" to "Political Science and Religious Studies.") In addition to the form, you should prepare a one-to-two-page statement explaining the academic reasons for the ad hoc proposal. Applications to transfer to an ad hoc combined PhD must also include a detailed outline and timeline for completing all requirements of the degree. 

Please note that a combined degree should represent some combination of the requirements of each program, as agreed to by both DGSs. It does not represent the total sum of requirements in both programs. The combined degree is not two PhDs, but rather a combination of two doctoral programs that can be completed within the student's normal time to degree. Requests to transfer to a combined program should be submitted to your current and prospective programs for review and approval. Approval is entirely at the discretion of each program. Programs then submit signed forms and materials to the Dean’s Office for final approval. These should be sent to [email protected] .

Generally, about 20 percent of Stanford MBA students take advantage of a joint or dual degree to complement their MBA. As a student, you may also take courses in any department or graduate school at Stanford University.

Dual Degrees

Interested in an additional discipline that is not represented in our joint degree programs? You can pursue a master’s degree from another Stanford program along with your MBA. While in the Stanford MBA program, you may not pursue concurrently more than one additional degree.  

You may pursue a dual degree with any graduate program at Stanford University. Candidates must apply to and be accepted by the other program separately, and then notify Stanford GSB. You may apply concurrently to both programs or apply to the dual degree program during your first year as an MBA student; some graduate programs also permit you to apply in your second year. As with joint degrees, you may only pursue one additional degree while in the MBA program.

You must spend five quarters of full-time study at Stanford GSB. The combined degree programs must be completed in one of the following timelines. Note that some programs may require a particular academic path in order to successfully complete both degrees.

Yale Medical School and Yale Law School

You must spend five quarters of full-time study at Stanford GSB and complete at least one year at YMS or YLS first. Consult with YMS or YLS for timeline requirements.

MD-PhD Dual Degree Training

MD-PhD programs provide training in both medicine and research. They are specifically designed for those who want to become research physicians.

The AAMC MD-PhD section is committed to recruiting and training a diverse Physician-Scientist workforce and an inclusive learning and working environment.

Graduates of MD-PhD programs often go on to become faculty members at medical schools, universities and research institutes. Regardless of where they eventually work, MD-PhD candidates are being prepared for careers in which they will spend most of their time doing research, in addition to caring for patients. The MD-PhD dual career is busy, challenging, rewarding, and offers opportunities to do good for many people by advancing knowledge, developing new treatments for diseases, and pushing back the boundaries of the unknown.

The Bloomberg School offers additional degree programs for students interested in combining various fields and disciplines. Students working toward degrees in medicine, social work, international relations or law may also integrate their degree programs with a public health degree. Even undergraduate students at Johns Hopkins University can earn a combined degree with the Bloomberg School.

Combined Bachelor's and Master's Programs

Undergraduate students at Johns Hopkins University that are already interested in pursuing advanced degrees can get a head start through these combined degree programs at the Bloomberg School.

We offer the Bachelor's degree and the Master of Health Science (MHS), the Bachelor's and the Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH), and the Bachelor's degree and the Master of Health Administration (MHA).

In partnership with the  Johns Hopkins School of Medicine , the Bloomberg School offers students the opportunity to earn a Doctor of Medicine (MD) alongside a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – a rigorous combination that prepares graduates for prestigious careers in academic medicine.

Students complete two years of medical school before devoting themselves full-time to their PhD studies. After completion of the PhD degree requirements, students then complete their MD degree.

The Bloomberg School’s combination of the Master of Arts (MA) and the Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) prepares students for careers that require health expertise plus an understanding of international and political issues.

Many graduates of the MA/MSPH combined degree program go on to manage health services and health systems in a variety of settings around the world.

Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health (MD/MPH)

The MD/MPH dual degree program provides medical students with a population-based perspective on health and tools to address public health challenges. Two years of training from  Johns Hopkins School of Medicine  or any accredited  U.S. medical school fulfills the two years of health-related work experience required for admission to the Bloomberg School MPH program.

Graduates earn an MD degree from their medical school and an MPH degree from the Bloomberg School. Alumni hold domestic and international leadership positions in top hospitals and medical schools.

Juris Doctor and Master of Public Health (JD/MPH)

The Juris Doctor and Master of Public Health (JD/MPH) dual degree program prepares students in the overlapping fields of law, public health, policy and ethics.

Graduates earn a JD degree from their accredited U.S. law school and an MPH degree from the Bloomberg School. Both degrees are awarded upon completion of the program.

Alumni have pursued careers in public policy, government, advocacy and academia.

Master of Public Health and Master of Business Administration (MPH/MBA)

The Bloomberg School and the Carey Business School of Johns Hopkins University offer the Master of Public Health and Master of Business Administration (MPH/MBA) dual degree program. Graduates receive two degrees on two separate diplomas.

The MPH/MBA provides experienced professionals with the knowledge and skills to be successful leaders in health-related organizations.

Master of Public Health and Master of Social Work (MPH/MSW)

The Bloomberg School and the University of Maryland School of Social Work offer the Master of Public Health and Master of Social Work (MPH/MSW) dual degree program.

Students gain a population-based perspective and expertise in the quantitative sciences that, when combined with training in social work, prepare them to be effective members of the social work community with the ability to plan, implement and evaluate service programs.

The MPH degree is awarded upon completion of the MSW degree.

Master of Laws and the Master of Public Health (LLM/MPH)

The Bloomberg School and the  Georgetown University Law Center’s O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law  offer the Master of Laws and the Master of Public Health (LLM/MPH) dual degree program.

Students are trained in public health practice and the role of law in solving critical global health challenges. Graduates earn the LLM degree in Global Health Law from Georgetown University and the MPH degree from the Bloomberg School. Both degrees are awarded upon completion of the program.

Concurrent Master’s Programs for Doctoral Students

The Bloomberg School offers several combined degree programs for doctoral degree candidates who are interested in simultaneously pursuing master’s degrees in either biostatistics or international health. We offer an MHS/Doctoral or a MSPH/Doctoral. 

Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine and Master of Public Health (DMV/MPH)

Veterinary students desiring a Master of Public Health (MPH) may enroll in the MPH program after graduation or after at least two years of veterinary school.  Students in the DVM/MPH program will earn a DVM from their veterinary school and an MPH from Johns Hopkins. 

In particular, JHSPH has partnered with the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) to offer combined degrees where JHSPH MPH graduates enter RUSVM to study veterinary medicine and that RUSVM DVM graduates enter the JHPSH MPH program.  

Doctor of Nursing- Executive Track and Master of Public Health (DNP/MPH)

The Bloomberg School and the School of Nursing of Johns Hopkins University offer the Doctor of Nursing- Executive Track and Master of Public Health ( DNP/MPH ) dual degree program.

This program prepares nurse leaders to take on executive level roles in healthcare and tackle critical public health challenges locally and globally. 

Master of Business Administration and Master of Public Health (MBA/MPH)

The Bloomberg School and the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) offer the Master of Business Administration and Master of Public Health (MBA/MPH) dual degree program.

M.Sc. - Ph.D. Dual Degree (2019)

The MSc.Ph.D. dual degree in Operations Research is an integrated doctoral programme, for those interested in a research oriented career.  The programme is open for students with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Statistics, and interested in research in engineering / interdisciplinary areas. The academic programme leading to the MSc.Ph.D. dual degree involves foundation courses, advanced courses and research work. The candidate will be awarded both the MSc. and Ph.D. degrees simultaneously on successful completion of the program.

MSc PhD Dual Degree

Admission : Through the Joint Admission for M.Sc. (JAM) exam ( www.iitb.ac.in/jam ).

Advisor /Guide / Supervisor : The allocation of the Guide will be at the end of fourth semester based on mutual (i.e., candidate and the guide) consent. The CGPI may be used to resolve conflicts, if any.

Award of the degrees : The candidate will be awarded both the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees simultaneously on successful completion of the program.

Comprehensive exam : This is an oral examination and it is mandatory to successfully complete this for continuing in the program.

WHO WILL EVALUATE:  The committee will comprise of five Faculty Members and at least one should be from Department Post-Graduate Committee.

SCOPE:  The candidate will be tested for his competence in subject areas related to the likely research topic that (s)he will pursue and the courses registered till date.

COMMITTEE’S RECOMMENDATION:  The committee will recommend that (i) the candidate be allowed to register for the Ph.D. program subject to completion of the prescribed course work, OR (ii) the candidate is not up to the mark and may be given at the most one more chance to appear for the comprehensive, OR (iii) the candidate, subject to successful completion of the prescribed course work, may be awarded only the M.Sc. degree and is NOT allowed to continue with the Ph.D. program.

WHEN:  During the fourth semester or the summer semester following the fourth semester i.e., a candidate who joins the program in July 2009, will have to have the comprehensive between January and July, 2011.

Course work : For five semesters. A candidate who fails to maintain a minimum CGPI of 6.0 will have to leave the program. No degree will be awarded to such candidates.

Duration : Six years

Exit policy : Candidate who leave the program mid-way will not be awarded any degree.

Fellowship : Teaching Assistantship (TAship) will be provided subject to the fulfillment of the academic criteria and satisfactory research progress. TAship will be provided for a maximum period of 7 years as follows: 1. Rs.6,000 /- pm from the date of joining till the date of confirmation of Ph.D. registration. 2. Rs.25,000 /- pm for first two years after confirmation of Ph.D. registration (3rd & 4th year of DD programme). 3. Rs.28,000/- pm for next three years (i.e. 5th, 6th & 7th year). Students who qualify in the national level JRF exams conducted by UGC, CSIR, GATE, DBT and ICMR can avail of these fellowships from the commencement of Semester V

M.Sc. project vis-à-vis Ph.D. topic : A student may continue his M.Sc. project for Ph.D.

Research progress : This will be monitored by a Research Progress Committee, just as in the case of students who are admitted directly to the Ph.D. program of the Institute.

What Are Dual Degrees?

Dual degrees combine two degree programs, often from two different departments within a university. Some schools allow you to create your own dual-degree program with the help of faculty advisors.

Dual-degree programs are rigorous but have benefits, usually allowing you to fulfill one degree’s elective requirements with credits from the other. You can finish most dual-degree programs within three or four years. And at the end, you’ll walk away with two diplomas.

Dual-Degree Program Structure

In general, you must apply and get accepted to both programs separately. Once enrolled, it’s crucial to stay on top of your academic schedule. Your academic advisor can help you manage your course load and make sure you’re on track to graduate.

Every university approaches dual-degree programs differently. For example, in Benedictine University’s dual MBA and master of public health (MPH) program, students must finish one degree before moving onto the next. At the University of Michigan , on the other hand, students spend one year focusing on each major and finish both programs in their third year.

Degree Requirements

Enrolling in a dual-degree program allows for some credit overlap, but you’re still responsible for fully completing both degrees, often including a thesis and internship.

Many schools take an integrated approach to dual-degree students’ thesis or capstone projects. Students use these projects to synthesize what they’ve learned from their two degrees. Faculty from both programs may advise students and sit on their capstone committee.

Some programs involve summer courses. Others require students to partake in internships for one or both summers. In programs like the University of Michigan’s, students must fulfill two internships, one in each discipline.

Popular Public Health Dual Master’s Degrees

An MPH is easily paired with related disciplines, both in and out of healthcare. Read on to learn about common public health dual-degree options.

Master of Business Administration/MPH

A dual-degree MBA/MPH prepares graduates for leadership positions within public health. An MBA degree may include courses in accounting, economics, project management and organizational behavior. Business knowledge complements the social, political and health sciences covered in an MPH program.

For example, students enrolled in Benedictine University’s MBA-MPH program complete one degree in its entirety before starting the second. But the dual program only takes 21 courses—significantly fewer than the 33 required to finish them separately. Benedictine expects completion within three and a half years.

Graduates typically work in management and leadership of health-related organizations. Having an MBA opens up senior-level management opportunities such as hospital administrator, CFO, healthcare manager and product development manager.

Master of Health Administration/MPH

The MPH/MHA dual degree is another great option for business-minded students. The MHA allows you to take on healthcare leadership roles, such as CEO or COO, program director or healthcare consultant.

MPH/MHA graduates learn to tackle health problems and manage healthcare systems on a large scale. They gain skills in health policy and delivery, crisis management and prioritizing various healthcare concerns.

For example, at Missouri State, the MPH and MHA programs overlap so students can complete both in less time. Faculty from both programs sit on students’ capstone committees, allowing students to work on a final project that merges the fields.

Master of Physician Assistant Studies/MPH

Physician assistants treat patients one-on-one, while public health focuses on population-level concerns. Studying these two disciplines prepares graduates to make an impact through public policy, program administration and health education. In addition to clinical work, job titles include:

Typically, there isn’t much overlap between a master of physician assistant studies (MPAS) and an MPH. Earning an MPAS involves extensive medical coursework, including in-person clinical experience.

For example, the University of North Texas offers an online MPAS/MPH dual-degree program. The PA coursework—completed in person—takes priority, and advisors help students fit in online MPH classes. Students can also complete that coursework in the year after earning their MPAS.

Some in-person programs ask students to complete a one-year MPH before beginning their PA coursework. These dual degrees usually take three years to finish, including one year of clinical rotation. Students complete a capstone project or thesis related to public health.

Master of Public Policy/MPH

The E-IPER Joint/Dual MS degree allows professional degree students to take advantage of environment and resources courses, faculty, and programs on campus, earning an MS while concurrently completing their MBA at the Graduate School of Business, JD at Stanford Law School, MA in the Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy program, MD at the School of Medicine, and PhD in another Stanford department or school.

What have past E-IPER Joint MS students gone on to do after they graduated?

Our students have gone on to a variety of interesting careers in government, non-profits, venture capital, start-ups, law firms, judicial clerkships and consulting. Upon graduation, our students have taken roles in organizations such as the Earth Justice, Google, Prelude Ventures, Opower, The Nature Conservancy, McKinsey, and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and large array of early stage companies.

What is the difference between a Joint MS and Dual MS?

At Stanford, a Joint MS is a Masters of Science degree that is completed concurrently with another graduate or professional degree, allowing some coursework to count towards both degrees. E-IPER offers a Joint MS for MBA students at Stanford's Graduate School of Business or JD students at the Stanford Law School. A Dual MS is a Masters of Science degree does not allow coursework to count toward both degrees. All requirements for each degree must be met.  E-IPER offers a Dual MS for MA students in the Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy program, MD students at the Stanford's School of Medicine, and PhD students from other Stanford departments and schools. E-IPER does not currently offer Dual MS-MS degrees.

Do I have an advisor while in E-IPER?

E-IPER Joint and Dual MS students are encouraged to seek out a faculty member to serve as an adviser. Students should consider the alignment of their own research and professional interests with the faculty member's work and interests. Students may want to seek out faculty with whom they have taken coursework or conducted a RAship. In addition, E-IPER staff and fellow students can provide advice on how to connect with E-IPER affiliated faculty. For the Capstone project, we recommend students engage with a technical advisor with expertise in the area you are working. 

Can I pursue Independent Study as a part of E-IPER?

Yes, students are eligible to complete up to 5 units of independent study under the guidance of a Stanford faculty member. Additionally, the Capstone Project is structured as a guided Independent Study on a project of your own selection. Students sometimes do pursue an Independent Study prior to their Capstone quarter to explore a particular project over an extended period of time.

Financial Considerations of the Joint MS Program

How long will it take to complete the joint ms degree.

The E-IPER Joint MS is a flexible program, and the time required to complete it depends on your professional school and your course planning. Generally, the Joint MS-MBA can be completed in 1-3 additional quarters beyond the 2-year MBA program. The Joint MS-JD can be completed within the 3 year JD program. The Dual MS-MA (MIP) can be completed in 1-3 additional quarters beyond the 2-year MIP program. The Dual MS-MD can be completed in 5 years, which includes an additional year beyond medical school. The Dual MS-PhD can be completed in 5 years.

How much does it cost?

Joint MS students pay tuition in their professional school: 2 years for MBA students and 3 years for Law students. Joint MBA , Dual MA (MIP), and Dual MD students who take additional quarters to complete their E-IPER coursework pay Stanford Graduate tuition, which is generally less than tuition at the Professional Schools. Graduate tuition rates are set by the University each year and depend on the number of units taken. Students should check with their professional school for more information about tuition and financial aid.

Is there funding available for Joint MS students?

E-IPER does not currently provide funding for Joint MS students. Students are encouraged to contact their professional school’s financial aid office to understand financial aid eligibility and options through their professional schools and/or sources outside Stanford.

Application Process

Who is eligible to apply.

Graduate students currently enrolled in the MBA program at Stanford's Graduate School of Business or JD program at the Law School are eligible to apply for the Joint MS in Environment and Resources. MA students in the Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy program, MD students at Stanford's Medical School, and PhD students in another Stanford department or school are eligible to apply for the Dual MS degree. Although admission to the E-IPER Joint MS Program is dependent on admission to one of the above listed graduate school programs, you may apply for the Joint MS at the same time you apply to your professional school.

I am not interested in an MBA, JD, MA (MIP), or MD degree. Can I still apply for the Joint MS in Environment and Resources?

No. We do not have a stand-alone MS degree. We do, however, have a PhD Program in Environment and Resources. 

Do I have to apply concurrently with my professional school application or can I apply later?

There are two ways to apply: you can apply concurrently with your professional school application or you can wait until your first year in your professional school. Applications for existing Professional School students are due at the end of January of your first year at Stanford.

Are there any prerequisites for applying to the E-IPER Joint MS Program?

Though E-IPER has no specific course prerequisites for application purposes, it is expected that students will enter the program with foundational quantitative skills. Some of these skills may be obtained through E-IPER coursework as long as students understand that this may extend the length of their program. As students create their program plan (see Curriculum page), they should consider what prerequisite courses they may need to take. Prerequisites for Stanford courses are listed in the course description. 

Could I be admitted to my professional school, but not E-IPER or vice-versa?

It is possible that students could be admitted to a professional school program, but not admitted to the E-IPER Joint MS and Dual MS Program. It is not possible to be admitted to the E-IPER program without also being admitted to a professional school program, as the MS in Environment and Resources is not a stand-alone MS degree. The Joint MS degree is conferred simultaneously with a Stanford JD and MBA degree. The Dual MS can be conferred in separate quarters for the Stanford MA (MIP), MD, or PhD degree, but  we encouraged to confer simultaneously.

Test Requirements

Are gre test scores required to apply to the joint ms program.

No, GRE scores are not required for application to the Joint and Dual MS Program. The E-IPER Admissions Committee will not be considering standardized test scores for Joint and Dual MS admission. However, the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, or MCAT scores that are submitted with your professional school application, may considered for your professional school application. Please reach out to your respective professional school to inquire about test score requirements.

FOR JOINT MS-JD STUDENTS ONLY: Students applying for the Joint JD-MS should include a brief description of their quantitative preparation (ie. previous coursework in mathematics, sciences, and engineering or relevant professional work) to demonstrate readiness for the science and engineering courses that are required of the Joint MS.

Are there any minimum score requirements on the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, or MCAT?

Since the E-IPER Admissions Committee will not be considering standardized test scores for Joint and Dual MS admission, there are no specific score requirements for the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, or MCAT.  However, E-IPER is a highly competitive program and the majority of admitted students have excellent academic records.

Should I send my test scores to E-IPER prior to applying to the Program?

Since the E-IPER Admissions Committee will not be considering standardized test scores for Joint and Dual MS admission, please do not send your professional school application test scores to E-IPER staff prior to applying to the Program. 

What is the TOEFL requirement?

If you were required to submit TOEFL scores as part of your application to your professional school, these will be forwarded to the E-IPER admissions committee. Applicants who hold a bachelor's degree or a two-year master's degree from an accredited English speaking university are exempted from the TOEFL requirement. Wharton + School of Advanced International Studies Dual Degree

This three-year, MA/MBA dual degree program, offered by Wharton and the School of Advanced International Studies  (SAIS) of The Johns Hopkins University in Washington, D.C., prepares students to operate in both business and the international political environment. Students earn an MBA from Wharton and an MA in international relations from SAIS, a program that pioneered area studies and the integration of international politics and economics. While in Washington, students have access to Washington’s resources and to leaders in foreign policy and international trade.

Applicants must begin the Wharton part of their program in Pre-Term, and conferral of each degree is contingent upon completion of all requirements for the other program. Students with less preparation in their chosen field of study or in their language requirement may need additional time to complete the SAIS degree. Requests to spend Year 1 at SAIS will also be considered.

Applicants should apply within the cycle directly preceding the year they would like to begin at Wharton. All requests for deferral will be considered within Wharton’s deferral policy.

Wharton + Harvard Kennedy School MPA/MBA and MPP/MBA Dual Degrees

These three-year, dual-degree programs, offered by Wharton and the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) prepare students to operate in both business and public policy or public administration fields. For students with an interest in crafting solutions for public problems across business, government, policy, and more, the dual degree MBA in public policy may be the path for you.

The dual degree option with Wharton allows students to complete the HKS portion of their dual degree over three semesters. The below shows the pathway for students completing the MPA degree where they split the second year between the schools. The MPA/MBA dual degree, MPA/ID and MPP pathways differ in that they require a full year at each school with the third year split between the two.

• The  Master in Public Administration (MPA)  prepares its graduates for positions of significant responsibility in the public, nonprofit, and private sectors. The program’s curriculum lends itself to individual tailoring with guidance from HKS faculty and administrators.
• Geared to the future leaders in the field of international development, the  Master in Public Administration/International Development (MPA/ID)  is an economics-centered, multidisciplinary program, combining analytical and quantitative methods with an emphasis on policy and practice.
• The  Master in Public Policy (MPP) equips future leaders with a conceptual framework and the specific skills they will need to be successful in public service. The initial emphasis of the curriculum is on building a strong conceptual foundation for analysis, management, and advocacy. This MBA/MPP dual degree program is a good option for students interested in working in politics or government.  

Applicants must fill out applications to both schools during the first year at either school or simultaneously before enrolling at either school. The two degrees may not be completed sequentially. Conferral of each degree is contingent upon completion of all requirements for the other program. Applicants should apply to Wharton during the application cycle directly preceding their desired Wharton start date. All requests for deferral will be considered within Wharton’s deferral policy.

Applying for a Dual MBA Degree Program

You can apply for one of the dual-degree programs if you are a current first-year student at one of our partner schools (except any of the Medical Sciences programs, which have different application guidelines) or you plan to pursue the first year of the dual degree at Wharton.

Candidates interested in applying to any other graduate program at Penn not listed above must apply to both programs separately and contact the other  program office for details on their courses. The Wharton MBA will be expected to be completed on a full-time basis, like all other degree candidates, with up to 4 courses being allowed to be taken at other Penn graduate schools.

What is the difference between an mba and masters degree.

An MBA is a Master of Business Administration degree. It’s a specific designation of a master’s degree course of study.

Am I able to apply to the Lauder Program after I have started the Wharton MBA Program?

The academic calendar for first-year students in the Lauder Program begins in May. Students that have been accepted to the Wharton MBA Program in Round 1 or Round 2 can apply separately to the Lauder Program and still will be expected to start the program in May. Students cannot apply to the Lauder Program after they have started their first or second years at Wharton. Can I combine the Lauder Program with a degree program other than the Wharton MBA?

Is Health Care Management a major or a separate health care program?

Health Care Management (HCM) is one of the 19 majors offered through the Wharton MBA Program. The Health Care Management major differs from other majors in that students must select this major at the time of application to Wharton. HCM integrates academic and professional development, helping students to obtain summer and permanent positions in all parts of the health care sector, including consulting firms, health care venture capital and private equity, digital health, health care analytics firms, biotechnology, pharmaceutical firms, hospitals, insurers, and government agencies. If prospective students wish to explore the Health Care Management major, the HCM department is happy to arrange either a telephone conversation or a meeting with June Kinney, the Associate Director of HCM. If I am not accepted into the Health Care Management major, can I still be admitted to Wharton?

Your application will be evaluated specifically for the Health Care Management major. If the Admissions Committee feels you are not best suited for HCM but could be a good fit for the MBA program more broadly, you will be considered for Wharton.

If I am admitted to a dual degree program with the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) or the School of Advanced Studies (SAIS), can I start my degree at HKS or SAIS instead of Wharton?

Applicants should apply to Wharton during the application cycle directly preceding their desired Wharton start date. If you are admitted to both programs and do not want to begin at Wharton, you will need to request a deferral and will be subject to our deferral policy. Deferrals typically are only granted for extenuating circumstances.

Are there any dual degree programs that will not allow me to start at Wharton?

The School of Design requires all dual degree students to start at Penn Design. The Harvard Kennedy School encourages students interested in the MPA/ID dual degree to start at HKS.

If I want to apply to a dual degree program, do I have to apply to the Wharton MBA Program and the other program separately?

Unless otherwise noted on the Interdisciplinary Programs website, you must submit separate applications and materials to both programs. Some schools will have strict application requirements around testing, recommendations, and essays. Please follow the admissions requirements for each individual school.

Are admissions decisions for dual degree programs made by one committee?

Applicants to the Lauder Joint MBA/MA in International Studies, the Francis J. & Wm. Polk Carey JD/MBA Program, and the MBA in Health Care Management will receive one joint decision. For all other MBA dual degree programs, you will receive separate decisions, and it is possible that you could be admitted to one program and not the other.

Can I create my own dual degree with a school not listed on the website?

We cannot accept any credits from other programs. You can pursue another program in your own time, but you would still be required to complete all Wharton credit units as prescribed by the full-time MBA program. As a full-time MBA student, you are expected to be at Wharton and pay tuition for four full semesters.

How do I learn more about a graduate program not listed on the Wharton Interdisciplinary Programs website?

How many credit units can I take at other Penn graduate schools while a Wharton MBA student?

All Wharton MBA students can take four to six credit units at other Penn graduate schools .

Can I apply to a dual degree program after starting at Wharton?

For most dual degree programs, you can apply to the other program during your first year at Wharton. However, this may extend your time at Penn.

Can I connect with a current student that is a part of a specific dual degree program?

Due to the volume of such requests, we are unable to connect prospective students with current students in every dual degree program. Please review the profiles of our Admissions Fellows and request to be connected with a current MBA student who most closely aligns with your interests.

What if I want to pursue a degree beyond the master’s level at Penn?

A call is open for the allocation of one research fellowship for PhD students (BI) or MSc degree holder enrolled in a non-academic degree course, within the Research Project entitled REPAIR: Repair and recovery in ischemic stroke: new cell therapy strategies, funded by Fundação La Caixa and Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia within the scope of the Promove Program, taking place at Health Sciences Research Center of the University of Beira Interior (CICS-UBI) https://www.ubi.pt/sites/cics/en# , under the following conditions:

 Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and related areas.

Objectives: 

Determine the therapeutic potential of preconditioned MSC and their secretome in a preclinical model of ischemic stroke and compare with the effect of an experimental drug.

Work plan: 

To determine the therapeutic potential of preconditioned MSC and their secretome in a preclinical model of ischemic stroke induced by transient occlusion of the middle cerebral artery in Wistar rats.

Where to apply

Requirements.

Hold a Master's degree in scientific area of Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences and related areas and meet the conditions to be enrolled in a cycle of studies leading to the PhD degree (or in a non-degree course).

-Experience in animal experimentation.

- Experience in cerebral ischemia models.

BIs awarded to MSc who attend courses that do not confer an academic degree can only be granted for a maximum period of one year.

BIs awarded to MSc who are enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree can only be awarded to those who do not exceed, with the conclusion of the fellowship contract in question, including any renewals, the accumulated period of two years in this type of fellowship, followed or interpolated.

The proof of registration in the PhD or Non-degree course is required for the fellowship contractualization.

Additional Information

A monthly maintenance allowance will be granted in accordance with the Annex I of the RBIUBI, with the amount of  1 259,64€ , according to the updated values that can be consulted at https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas . The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can choose to be covered by the voluntary social insurance. These values will be added to the amount of monthly maintenance allowance. 

Curriculum evaluation and research/professional experience in the areas mentioned in the admission requirements (60%), and interview (40%).

Complaint and Appeal Procedures: 

After communication of the provisional lists of the results in the different phases of the selection process (Admission and Exclusion, Curricular Evaluation, and Interview), the candidates have 10 working days to pronounce their disagreement, under the terms of article 121 and the Código do Procedimento Administrativo . If any allegations are presented, the final decision will be issued after the analysis of the statements presented during the prior hearing of interested parties. After the statutory deadline of 10 working days, the proposal for the final classification and ranking of the candidates becomes definitive.

The proposal for the final ranking of the candidates will constitute a reserve list for selection for a period of 12 months.
