How to Delete a Submission on Canvas: A Step-by-Step Guide
Canvas is a widely used learning management system that allows students and instructors to interact and manage assignments. However, there may be instances when a student submits an assignment in the wrong place or provides an incomplete/wrong submission. In such cases, it becomes necessary to delete the submission. In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the process of deleting a submission on Canvas.
Table of Contents
Introduction, step 1: access the assignments, step 2: locate the assignment, step 3: open assignment options, step 4: delete the submission, step 5: notify the student.
Canvas does not provide a direct option to delete a student’s submission for an assignment. However, there are workarounds that can be used to achieve this goal. Let’s dive into the step-by-step process.
To begin, log in to your Canvas account and navigate to the course where the assignment is located. Look for the “Assignments” tab or link in the course navigation menu and click on it.
In the “Assignments” section, find the specific assignment for which you want to delete a submission. Scroll through the list and locate the assignment. If needed, you can use the search or filter options to quickly find the assignment.
Once you have located the assignment, look for the options icon associated with it. The options icon is usually represented by three dots or lines. Click on the options icon to reveal a dropdown menu.
From the dropdown menu, select the “Delete” option. Please note that this action will not delete the entire assignment but only the specific submission made by the student.
After deleting the submission, it is crucial to communicate the change to the student. Reach out to them through Canvas messaging or any other preferred communication method to inform them of the deletion and provide any necessary instructions or directions for resubmission.
While Canvas does not offer a direct option to delete student submissions, you can follow the steps outlined in this guide to effectively delete a submission. Remember to notify the student about the deletion and guide them on how to resubmit if necessary.
By following these steps, you can maintain the integrity of assignments and ensure that students submit their work correctly.

Allowing a Resubmission
By default, resubmissions are always allowed if the instructor leaves the Attempts setting at "Unlimited". After students submit their assignment, they may revisit the assignment to submit a new version. As the instructor, you can view the various versions of the submission, deciding which version to accept and grade. Prevent students from revisiting the assignment by limiting the number of attempts in the assignment settings or set an Until availability date.

Creating Group Assignments
To create an assignment that the students will submit as part of a group, check the box for "This is a Group Assignment" in the Group Assignment area.

- How do I allow a student extra time to (re)submit an assignment submission?
Updated on Apr 19, 2022
In the event that a student needs to resubmit a file to an Assignment activity that is locked because the Available / Until dates have passed, instructors can update an Assignment's settings to provide the singular student access to re-upload their work.
Individual students may need extra time to submit or even resubmit files for a variety of reasons including:
- Accessibility Accommodations
- Instructor Approved Extension
- Multiple Draft Submissions
- Uploaded Incorrect File
- Uploaded Corrupted File*
- Navigate into your Assignment item and click the " Edit" button.
- In the Assignment setup page, scroll down to the " Assign " settings.
- Click the " +Add " button to add additional assign criteria.
This process assumes that your Assignment's Submission Attempts setting is set to Unlimited, which is the default for Assignments. If you have an Assignment with Limited attempts set to one (1), then you will need to first delete the student's submission, then follow the steps listed above before they can resubmit.
- In the new box that opens below the original Assign section, click into the " Assign To " field to select your student that needs to resubmit.
- Set the " Due " date and " Until " date to the day and time when the student must have their file resubmitted.
- When done, click " Save ."
*Students may sometimes upload a corrupted file intentionally, to give the illusion of an on time submission and thereby gain additional time to work on the assignment. Common ways of corrupting a file include changing the file extension (i.e. taking a .png file and changing it to a .doc to make it appear like a Word document), interrupting the Save / Compress file process, or downloading a file that looks corrupted when opened.

Hello @Yeslech ,

May I suggest you try deleting the assignment submission by following the below steps:
- On the assignment submissions page
- Go to the user whose assignment needs to be deleted
- Select the checkbox and click on the delete option (screenshot attached)
If in case the user has multiple submissions but only one needs to be deleted, then you can use the individual submission option.

How do I manage my Canvas files as a student?
November 9, 2021
Dear Students,
We hope that this message finds you well.
Did you know that you have a personal, private space in Canvas where you can view and manage all of the files that you have uploaded? To access your personal Canvas file storage area, click on Account (your profile picture) in the top left corner of Canvas, then click on the Files link.
Familiarizing yourself with your personal Canvas file storage area can come in handy in a number of scenarios. For example:
Do you need to retrieve an assignment that you submitted in a past course?
Maybe you are creating a portfolio and want to highlight a particular assignment that you did in a course that you no longer have access to on Canvas. Or maybe you are applying to graduate school and need to provide a writing sample. The Submissions folder in your personal file storage area can help!
From the Canvas Student Guide: “The Submissions folder contains copies of your assignment submissions; assignments are organized by course folder and displayed alphabetically. However, assignments submitted through an external tool are not copied to the Submissions folder.”
Have you exceeded your Canvas file storage quota?
You are trying to upload or attach a file somewhere in Canvas (perhaps a discussion in one of your courses), but you are getting an error message that indicates that you have exceeded your Canvas file storage quota. Not to worry! In your personal file storage area, you can delete any large files that you no longer need in order to free up file storage space.
You can check the percentage of file storage space that you have used at any time by referencing the bar in the bottom left corner of your personal Canvas file storage area.
From the Canvas Student Guide: “Files that have been submitted as assignments and graded discussions do not apply to the user quota. […] Any files in the My Files folder that are not related to assignment submissions count toward your user quota.” The files may be located in a sub-folder, such as conversation attachments (which stores files that you have attached to Conversations/Inbox messages) or unfiled (which stores files that you have attached to discussion topics or discussion replies). You’ll want to check these areas for any large files. You can click on the three dots to the right of a file to delete it (you can always download the file first, then delete it, if you are worried that you don’t have it saved anywhere).

Here is a way to delete all submissions from an assignment that worked for me. Click the three dots and create a duplicate assignment. Then you can delete the original.
These steps will not work to delete just one student's submission. Once a student has submitted an assignment, it's in Canvas permanently.
You are correct in that the option to delete a submission is only available for Admin roles. The instructor and Student are unable to actually delete submissions due to their course role permission set. The student can always re-submit to the assignment and the instructor can use the latest submission to be used for the final grade, if needed.
Canvas does not provide a direct option to delete a student’s submission for an assignment. However, there are workarounds that can be used to achieve this goal. Let’s dive into the step-by-step process.
If an assignment has student submissions, this will remove student submissions and any comments. 1. In Course Navigation, click the Assignments link. 2. Locate the assignment you want to delete and click the Options icon. 3. Click the Delete link. If you have more questions, email [email protected] or call 864-656-3494.
Canvas does not allow you to delete student submissions for assignments (e.g., file uploads, student annotations) nor allows you to give a specific student extra attempt (s).
How do I delete an assignment? Establish a routine pattern of assignments and activities for students. When assigning an assignment that students will complete each week, create the assignment once, then duplicate it and move it to subsequent weeks.
