To become a PE teacher in a public school, you'll need a bachelor's degree in physical education or a related field, as well as a teaching certificate from the state in which you want to work. To obtain the teaching certificate, you'll need to take courses in pedagogy, child development and other educational subjects.

Activities Director

A physical education background can also come in handy for careers related to adult physical activity. People who major in physical education in college can go on to become an activities director on a cruise ship, in a country club or athletic facility or even in a prison. As the physical activities director, you'll be planning activities that work well for the particular population. That might include sporting activities, dances, outings such as hikes, fun runs or walks or active fundraisers. You might also help individuals utilize resources in the local area. For example, you might point a client toward a surfing workshop at a cruise port of call, or help a senior citizen find a walking group.

Athletic Coach

A physical education background lends itself well to a career as a coach -- whether that be coaching young people or college or professional athletes. In many states, coaches at the high school or even middle school level are required to have a teaching credential, or to take special coursework that prepares them for teaching. Having personal experience playing the particular sport you're coaching is a big help, but your degree in physical education may also provide you more in-depth knowledge of that sport or activity.

Fitness Instructor or Personal Trainer

careertrend article image

Physical education majors can also become personal trainers, group fitness instructors or strength coaches. Some colleges offer coursework that allows you to obtain your certification in one of these fields at the same time as you're getting your PE degree. If that's not an option, your degree requirements will have likely covered anatomy, physiology and other subjects that will help you pass a certifying exam through the American Council on Exercise, the American College of Sports Medicine or another certifying body. Personal trainers and group fitness instructors don't typically need a college degree, but if you aspire to be a strength and conditioning coach through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, one of the prerequisites is a college degree.

Career Paths You Can Take with a Physical Education Degree

December 29, 2020 | Written By Ben Kissam

Career Paths You Can Take with a Physical Education Degree

Physical educators work on the front lines each day to help students stay healthy, not just physically but also mentally and emotionally. With about 13.7 million overweight or obese children in the United States , according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these educators can play a key role in reversing the trend. Many also serve as leaders and change agents in their communities, whether as coaches, counselors, or managers in a variety of settings.

Here’s a look at the graduate physical education degree programs Azusa Pacific University offers, and the many careers your education could lead to.

MS in Physical Education

Earning a graduate physical education degree doesn’t mean you have to become a teacher. In fact, APU offers concentrations and specializations that allow you to tailor your skills and interests for careers in athletics, leadership, or counseling.

“APU’s graduate physical education programs are time-honored, with the first graduate physical curriculum offered approximately 50 years ago,” said Cindy Tanis, PhD, director of graduate physical education and an associate professor at Azusa Pacific. “The program has transitioned over time according to professional standards and credentials, becoming what is now the prestigious Master of Science in Physical Education.”

Non-teaching jobs you can find with an MS in Physical Education include:

  • Athletic coach
  • Health and wellness coordinator
  • High school/college athletic counselor
  • High school/college athletic director

You can even merge sports and business with APU’s sport management concentrations —a highly marketable distinction that can provide you the skills and insights needed to become a manager, PR professional, or even a sports entrepreneur.

“This program is thorough and well-rounded, leaving the graduate confident in their ability to be a difference-maker in their community and in the lives of those whom they serve,” said Kody Moffat, MS ’19, a professor and men’s water polo coach at Palomar College. “The master’s in physical education program at Azusa Pacific University equipped me with the knowledge, resources, network, and confidence to be successful as I continue to pursue teaching and coaching at the community college level.”

MA in Physical Education with Single Subject Teaching Credential

If you know academics is the career path you want to pursue, the single subject teaching credential at APU may be the path for you. This program equips students to teach at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

“The master’s degree program was a great source of information, and I still refer to some of the projects I did to help me now when I am teaching,” said Lani Ruh, ’17, a professor and water polo and swimming coach at Mt. San Antonio College. “I was able to get my dream career because of the help, support, and encouragement by those in the program! College is an important time of growing and learning in a young person’s life, and it is a blessing to be able to be a part of their journey.”

Those who successfully complete this program earn a 2042 Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing , meaning they can teach physical education in California.

Other jobs you can get with this degree include:

  • Adventure/outdoor educator
  • Athletic director
  • College professor
  • Fitness instructor
  • Health/wellness teacher

While a master’s degree isn’t required to teach physical education in K-12 settings, having one can set you apart from other candidates when you look for your first job. Plus, your salary will likely be higher than if you only have a bachelor’s degree.

MA in Physical Education with Adapted Physical Education Added Authorization

It might surprise you to learn that children and adults with disabilities are at the greatest risk for obesity , per the CDC, and health care costs for this demographic surpass $44 billion each year in America. If you want to serve this demographic in need of change agents—and challenge yourself professionally in the process—APU’s MA in Physical Education with Adapted Physical Education Added Authorization can help you do just that.

More specifically, the 15-unit Adapted Physical Education Added Authorization specialization allows you to develop the pedagogical abilities needed to instruct all students. In addition, you can learn how to assess and develop gross motor skill goals, write an Individualized Education Program (IEP), and learn how to impact students with physical and intellectual disabilities.

“You get to know your students at a more personable level, help them achieve their goals, advocate for their rights, and make a difference in their physical education,” said Margarita Pulido, MA ’19, an adapted physical education teacher in the Anaheim Elementary School District. “It is a career that requires you to think critically and outside the box, be creative and patient, and most importantly, have fun.”

Potential careers you could pursue with this degree and experience include:

  • Camp/activities program directo
  • College professorr
  • Special education lobbyist/activist
  • Special education teacher

As you can see, a physical education degree can be tailored to meet your individual career goals. “APU offers multiple options and emphases related to physical education to help students find the program that aligns with their career path,” said Tanis. When deciding which path to pursue, Tanis recommends asking questions such as: Is the program long-standing and reputable? Is it accredited? Does the program have professors trained in physical education? And if you want to make a difference through physical education and sport, earning an advanced degree will set you up for career success from the start.

Physical Education Majors Guide

What does it mean to study physical education and health.

An education degree in physical education and health is an important component of earning a position related to:

  • general exercise

Though some of the program content for these degree programs quite literally involves “fun and games,” students seeking a physical education and health degree also enroll in serious academic courses on subjects such as kinesiology, morphology, and physiology (studies related to motion, body structure, and function). The science and art of teaching also play an important role in the curriculum of a physical education and health degree program.

Preparing for Physical Education and Health Studies

Before launching into a physical education and health degree program, a student should consider as many aspects of this career as possible. One way to do this is by asking coaches and P.E. teachers about the challenges and rewards of their position.

The courses that make up a physical education or health sciences curriculum may surprise some students. Most physical education and health programs include classes on the science of motion, function and body structure. The details of fitness, nutrition and hygiene receive critical context through more complex courses in various sciences. In other words, if you think going into health will allow you to ignore science classes, you should probably reconsider your approach.

It helps to be a “people person” in this career. Instructing pupils in gym classes or on a field requires interpersonal skills such as good communication, leadership and discipline. While teachers in other subjects may focus on a text or an abstract idea that can be thought out well in advance, instructors in physical education and health must engage their students in a personal, dynamic way that cannot really be scripted.

You should also consider the amount of public attention in the community that coaches often attract. Physical education and health majors should develop a level of comfort in the spotlight, especially when dealing with the news media, sports fans, booster clubs, etc.

Physical Education and Health Degree Programs

Online degrees in physical education and health.

Students can take advantage of online degree programs in physical and health education, cutting down on campus commutes and residency requirements. These e-learning programs can be especially useful for working educators who don’t want to step off the tenure track in order to earn their degrees.

Even in this highly physical and experiential discipline, there is plenty of health-related theory and research that students should learn, which can be conveyed through an online degree program in physical education and health. Many online degree programs allow students to complete necessary residency and teaching requirements at nearby campuses or other facilities.

Certificate Programs in Physical Education and Health

A certificate program usually consists of a course or a series of courses designed to teach students about a specific field, such as exercise science or sports management. The curriculum for these programs can vary wildly, as different certificates specialize in different aspects of health and fitness. However, some of the more common topics to see in these programs are:

  • Curriculum planning
  • Mental health
  • Various other health issues

Associate Degrees in Physical Education and Health

Associate degree programs in physical education and health are often found at community colleges, where they can be taken by students who are looking to further their education, but aren’t ready or able to set aside four years for a bachelor’s program. Such situations might apply to trainers looking to earn specific certification; gym instructors; or fitness leaders program leaders. Some health education venues, such as public outreach organizations, may also accept associate’s degrees as sufficient qualification for a position.

Furthermore, students who have earned an associate degree may be able to return to school, even after an absence (i.e. to work and earn money for school), and transfer some, most, or even all of their associate degree credits into a bachelor’s degree program, as long as the credits are approved by the bachelor’s program.

Bachelor’s Degree Programs in Physical Education and Health

Although each college seems to offer a different title for this type of degree, a bachelor’s degree program in health and exercise generally focuses on the tools needed to teach these subjects in K-12 classes. Experienced coaches may qualify for employment in college athletic departments after earning this degree, although earning a master’s degree in a topic such as sport psychology or human movement might be preferred. Teaching college courses in this field requires an advanced degree in health education or a related field.

In addition to the core curriculum (math, science, English) required by most bachelor’s degree programs, a physical education and health degree program generally focuses on:

  • Learning how to analyze human performance
  • The effects of muscular and skeletal functions on performance
  • Kinesiology (human movement studies)

What Can You Do With a Physical Education and Health Degree?

From kindergarten to college, a physical education and health degree qualifies graduates to teach. Instruction involves not only gym or field time but often classroom instruction, depending on your specialty. Demand for online teaching grows every semester, affording talented instructors the opportunity to expand their scope by producing webcasts and videos of their lectures.

At one time or another, many graduates who have earned a physical education and health degree find themselves coaching. Often, teachers who coach receive supplemental pay for their extra time, especially at the college level.

Beyond the training required in both individual and team sports, physical education graduates may work as trainers in private gyms, aerobic centers, recreation centers and many other establishments, teaching others about performance analysis and movement study.

Performance Analysis

Many amateur and professional athletes search for an instructor or mentor or trainer who can break down their performance into its various components and analyze how they can increase speed or find more efficiency in their movements. A physical education and health degree can supply the required skills for this function.

Sports and Recreation Management

With a recreation or leisure studies degree, a graduate can coordinate of the myriad activities at a sports or recreation center, as well as in a municipal recreation program.

Especially at the doctoral level, a physical education and health degree can launch a research career. This career track appears most often in the field of kinesiology, or study of human movement.

Other Specialties

These include activities director, camp director, nutrition specialist, occupational exercise scientist, spa/health club manager, corporate fitness instructor, rehabilitation specialist, and many more.

Physical Education and Health Certification, Licensure and Associations

Before they can teach at the K-12 level, physical education and health majors must still participate in the usual certification processes required in their state and district. In addition, they may be required to receive special certification for some teaching or coaching jobs related to health or sports.

Many states have professional associations for teachers specializing in physical education and health. These and other associations supply teachers with information and encouragement on an ongoing basis. Some organizations for coaches and trainers include:

  • National Association for Sport and Physical Education
  • National Athletic Trainers Association

Careers and Branches of Physical and Health Education

Physical Education is a classroom-based course intended to understand physical activity within the field of health. It focuses on teaching students how to become physically fit. Physical education classes focus specifically on the body; they teach students how to understand and improve their bodies through exercise, sports, and otherwise. Physical education programs are mandatory in most schools; it’s considered an essential part of a well-rounded education.

First, there are two types of physical education that one can pursue; these are coaching or leisure sports. A coach is responsible for educating children on proper techniques in different sports and improving skills through practice and gameplay. Leisure sports include playing any sport (fishing) without the pressure of being good at it or making it into professional leagues (for example). Some people enjoy fishing simply because it provides relaxation and an opportunity to socialize.

Another sub-discipline within physical education includes activity for disease prevention, like dietary guidance and smoking cessation. Physical activities that focus on these goals are considered health-oriented. Health-oriented programs include training in healthy eating habits and exercise; they also teach kids to make intelligent decisions about their bodies, like avoiding drugs and alcohol (substance abuse).

Physical and health education is a diverse field that allows people to become engaged in numerous areas of expertise. Physical and health education branches enable professionals to work with specific populations or to specialize in particular disciplines. One can make several different career choices upon graduating from an accredited physical education program, including working as a gym teacher, athletic coach, personal trainer, aerobics instructor, park ranger, or other careers requiring the knowledge learned during Physical & Health Degrees.

Kinesiology

Kinesiology is the study of human movement, which falls under physical education as well. Kinesiologists work alongside athletes directly or as athletic trainers; they’ll often provide feedback about how to execute specific exercises and whether changes need to be made moving forward (so as not to injure a student’s body). They also help individuals recover from injuries and coach them to prevent those injuries from happening again.

Careers in Physical and Health Education

Physical and health education is an academic discipline with career opportunities such as:

  • Physical and Health education teacher
  • Physical Education teacher
  • Physical therapist
  • Physical therapist assistant
  • Physical therapy aide
  • Athletic trainer
  • Physical Fitness Technician
  • Career Counselor
  • Dietitian/Nutritionist
  • Kinesiologist
  • Personal trainer/sports trainer/fitness instructor/aerobics instructor
  • Orthopedics Technologist

What do they all have in common? They all require a degree from an accredited college or university. The course of study for PE, Physical Therapist, Physical Therapy Aide, and Physical therapy assistant is different from other disciplines because it is recommended that these courses include some basic sciences such as anatomy and physiology, along with the study of kinesiology. Other careers mentioned above may not necessarily need additional science studies, although most Physical Education degrees require at least one class in this area.

The career path to becoming a physical and health education teacher differs for each of the above careers. Physical and Health Education requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, along with satisfying any course work or extra training needed for state licensure. Physical Therapists must complete at least a four-year bachelor’s degree and then attend an accredited Physical Therapy program to become either Physical Therapist Assistant or Physical Therapist Aide.

Branches of Physical & Health Education

The branches of Physical and Health Education include:

1) Athletics: Coaches and develops athletes in a variety of sports.

2) Leisure Sports: Brings sports activities to the public, such as community centers and camps

3) Fitness: Brings fitness activities to the public, such as health clubs and group exercise classes

4) Recreation: Brings organized recreational activities for various age groups

5) Dance: Brings dance training to students of all skills levels

6) Sports Medicine Science: Uses scientific knowledge about athletics and physical activity to improve athletic performance and prevent injuries

7) Sports Science & Technology: Brings science, technology, engineering, and mathematics together to improve athletic training/performance

8) Physical and Health Instructors: Physical Education is one of the most popular college degrees and a critical school requirement that helps ensure children stay fit while engaged in childhood activities. It is important to note that Physical Education (PE) majors typically take courses like anatomy & physiology I/II (Kinesiology), biomechanics, motor learning, and coaching courses to prepare them for the real world.

Physical Education teachers must have a degree from an approved teacher training program, which usually takes four years after completing a bachelor’s degree course in Physical Education. Physical Education teachers are expected to have above-average communication skills because they explain their lesson plans to students. These instructors often travel from school to school, meaning they must be willing to move frequently. They guide students through a wide range of exercises, working with gym equipment and outside activities. Physical Education courses are offered at the high school level only. Physical Education is required worldwide, so job opportunities are abundant–especially for those interested in coaching.

Those with degrees in Physical Education may work outside these fields. However, there is still a crossover with their skillset. It is also important to remember that these branches are not mutually exclusive and may overlap. Take, for instance;

  • Personal Trainer – Strength and Conditioning Coach – Team Sports Instructor – Yoga/Pilates Instructor

Brings equipment such as free weights, treadmills, weight racks, medicine balls, and other fitness equipment to a gym or studio where they work. They create workout routines for clients to follow based on their personal goals and needs and offer instruction on correcting form and maintaining posture. Many trainers specialize in specific sports or types of training, such as training for runners or gymnastics.

Brings strength and conditioning equipment to a gym or park setting where athletes train during practice sessions. The strength coach works with the athletes by teaching them how to lift weights and keep fit.

In Physical education, teachers help students to develop physically, gain knowledge in the fitness process, learn safety guidelines for physical activity & cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and adapt physical activities for students with various disabilities. Physical educators create plans that integrate concepts in math or language arts along with movement. They must be well versed in different aspects such as social studies, science, health, and nutrition. These skills will benefit any students that are thinking of becoming Physical Education teachers. Physical education teachers work for physical education classes, recess, or afterschool programs, which need Physical Education instructors to ensure students are safe and learning new skills to stay healthy. They also teach students to play different sports such as basketball, softball, tennis, or soccer.

While some Physical Education graduates might get jobs working at hotels or clubs related to sports medicine or fitness management, others might work at parks, resorts, stadiums, colleges, etc. Additionally, some Physical Education graduates may work on cruise ships, where Physical Education is mandatory for all passengers. Also, they are found in elementary schools, but some Physical Educators are also employed in high schools or community centers. Few of them work in colleges as instructors in physical activity classes, such as yoga or Pilates.

Although Physical and Health Education might sound redundant, Physical Education focuses on the sports side while Physical and Health addresses the health portion of Physical Education.

Physical health education is similar to Physical Education but more focused on academic study than physical activity. The focus is still on teaching students about being healthy physically and helps them learn other things such as anatomy, human development, fitness principles, sports medicine, nutrition, and recreational activities.

The job market for physical education teachers in the United States

There are currently an estimated 16,300 physical education teachers in the United States. The physical education teacher job market is expected to grow by 3.1% between 2022 and 2032.

How employable are physical education teachers?

CareerExplorer rates physical education teachers with a D employability rating, meaning this career should provide weak employment opportunities for the foreseeable future. Over the next 10 years, it is expected the US will need 3,900 physical education teachers. That number is based on 500 additional physical education teachers, and the retirement of 3,400 existing physical education teachers.

Are physical education teachers in demand?

Aspiring physical education teachers who are themselves fit and have experience in team sports and knowledge of kinesiology and age-level appropriate nutrition will find that they are in demand and have an employment advantage over their competitors. This has become increasingly true in face of the growing rates of childhood and adolescent obesity. Children and youth, more than ever before, are in need of role models who live healthy and active lives. Job opportunities in the field are influenced by student enrolment levels and vary by location and regional budgets. Some PE teachers assume the additional role of coach for one more of their school’s sports teams. Generally, they hold a Bachelor’s Degree in physical education or health, as well as a teaching license, and are qualified to teach from kindergarten through grade twelve upon graduation. The most sought after ‘phys ed’ teachers complement this formal training with cultural sensitivity and the capacity to motivate and inspire students. Those who pursue a Master’s or Doctorate normally seek employment with the physical and health education or exercise science programs of universities.
