Gadget Reviews: 10 Top Tips for Writing Them

Katrina Hatchett

Most people wouldn’t dream of buying a gadget before reading up on reviews. Here is how to write a helpful, informative gadget review in 10 simple steps.

Netflorist

1. Know your product before you write the gagdet review

Before jumping straight into a review take time to really get to know the gadget and discover all that it has to offer. No one wants to have the product manual regurgitated to them. What they want is to hear from someone that has taken the time to play around with the product. This is the information that cannot be found in the manual, that only you, with the product in your hands, are able to provide.

When purchasing gadgets people want to have the BEST. So when writing about these products take time to assess the benefits and limitations and the amount in which these weigh up to the specifications of similar gadgets on the market.

Tip: In order to go the extra mile, try adding in tests and benchmarks that you have run on these products in regards to how well they perform in your gadget review. Giving people a hard fact in addition to your own opinions helps make your review stand out from the others.

3. Marks Out of 10?

One feature that always stands out in a gadget review is the classic … /10. Not only does this help simplify the features for the reader but it also grabs the attention of the eye when quickly scanning through. It also makes it much easier to compare to other gadgets.

Tip: “Make sure you go on to explain the reasons behind your scoring. Go into the little details that really pushed your buttons about this gadget (both positively and negatively). If it annoyed you it is sure to annoy others,” suggests Tony Markson, a developer at Write My X and Australia 2 Write .

4. State the obvious

When you have a product in front of you it is easy to brush over the more obvious basic features. However, these are often the most important. Although it is often denied, the look and feel of a gadget is almost as important as how well it functions.

5. Provide pictures with your gadget review

Providing photos of the gadget without the flashy backdrops, lighting and cameras helps show people exactly what they are getting. People love to see how these products match up to their professional online photographs.

6. Prove this one is real

People are becoming more and more sceptical about whether what they read online is real or fake (and rightly so). It is common knowledge that people are now being paid to write fake gadget reviews in order to both boost and sabotage products. A real review is easy to spot as it mentions specifics. People being paid to write fake reviews will be too lazy to find these out.

7. Introductory Summary

After writing the review create a short summary and place it at the start. List the 3 main pros and cons, the ‘deal breakers’.

For example, I have been looking to buy a portable charger and a useful review I came across was a 2-star review that explicitly listed the pros and cons so that I instantly knew that this was not the portable charger for me.

“The review stated that this particular one had no way of indicating whether it was charged or not. Whereas others on the market not only showed whether it was charged but also exactly how many more charges it had left,” says August D. Bentley, a tech editor at BritStudent and 1 Day 2 Write .

8. Direct title

Do not go for the generic ‘great gadget’ or ‘poor performance’ title for your gadget review. These give no specifics and often look fake. List the deal breakers (mentioned in the review) within the title itself. This way people know exactly what you are going to be saying.

Private Internet Access

9. Write a Short But Sweet Gadget Review

If your review is too long people won’t take the time to read it. Between 200 and 300 words is the optimum.

10. Is it worth what you pay?

Finally make sure you mention cost. The most important factor people want to know is whether they are getting value for money.

By following these 10 easy steps to write a gadget review you can help consumers make more highly educated decisions when purchasing gadgets.

Powerful Impacts of the Use of Gadgets and the Internet Essay

Introduction, smartphones and social interactions, smartphones, concentration, and engagement, rewired brain, space to be real self.

It is hard to disagree that people’s attitudes toward something new usually vary, and while some celebrate and welcome the benefits it brings, others only focus on the negative effects. One of the most contradictory scientific and societal responses is to the role smartphones, the Internet, and social media, in particular, play in individuals’ lives. Nowadays, it is common to see people in the subway, cafe, office, or shop staring at their phones and ignoring what is happening around them. Opinions regarding this often vary because one can concentrate on the different aspects of the situation. Overall, researchers highlight both the advantages and disadvantages of smartphones and the Internet, but most tend to focus on the bright side of the situation, and I support their view.

The first argument opposers of frequent use of the Internet and mobile phones in general provide is that they deprive people of communication with others, making them isolated and less empathetic. For example, according to Turkle (2015), in 2015, “89 percent of cellphone owners said they had used their phones during the last social gathering they attended” (para. 2). Carr (2017) also believes that social relationships and skills suffer when people use their gadgets too often. However, other studies show that it is a way to stay connected and show emotions that have changed (Fuentes, 2019). Many people smile, laugh, anticipate, and demonstrate other feelings when texting with their friends or leaving comments on social media (Brody, 2020). After all, “a conversation broken up into short bursts and quick emoticons is still a conversation” (Goldsmith, 2016, para. 5). Gadgets do not harm communication with others but emphasize the need to be connected and provide such a possibility.

Secondly, many children often hear from their parents that gadgets make them less concentrated and focused. Some researchers support such an opinion: Carr (2017) indicates that when people hear their smartphone receiving a notification, even if they do not check it, their concentration, engagement, and attentiveness levels decrease severely. Turkle (2015) finds it vital to spend more time without gadgets to improve concentration levels. On the contrary, Goldsmith (2016) notices that it is rare to see a person more concentrated than someone who is reading or watching something on their device. As for engagement, its lack in some actions people make using their devices can be defined as a chance to choose to be involved in the content they like (Goldsmith, 2016). Therefore, areas of engagement may shift from time to time, and it is great that users nowadays always have a wide range of online activities to choose from.

Next, the aspects discussed above make some researchers claim that unlimited access to gadgets and virtual space changes how one’s brain works. According to Carr (2017), “as the brain grows dependent on the technology, the research suggests, the intellect weakens,” and the enhancing proximity of the smartphone makes brainpower decline (para. 4). What is more, social media and the Internet, in general, make people adopt “the app way of thinking” (Turkle, 2015, para. 28). However, Goldsmith (2016) and Fuentes (2019) do not consider this fact increasingly disturbing as they believe that changes in the human brain in response to the developing world are unavoidable. Goldsmith (2016) poses an interesting question: “wouldn’t it be strange if, in the midst of this digital revolution, we were still expected to use our brains in the same way we read books?” (para. 8). Consequently, the change in thinking and analysis patterns do not necessarily mean the degradation of the human brain.

Finally, another aspect related to the use of gadgets that many researchers highlight is that virtual space allows people to act the way they want and be their true selves. On the one hand, such an opportunity leads to specific problems: some users might post threats on the Internet and demonstrate other aggressive behavior, showing, as some claim, humans’ true nature (Fuentes, 2019). However, both Goldsmith (2016) and Fuentes (2019) do not think that social media and mobile devices are directly related to the growing rates of online aggression. Moreover, when accessing virtual space, many people use it to show the other part of themselves – instead of negativity and hatred, they demonstrate cohesion, empathy, cooperation, support, and love (Brody, 2020). Therefore, talking only about aggressive online behaviors is incorrect because another, more powerful side of the situation exists.

To conclude, the paper demonstrates researchers’ different views on a number of aspects related to the use of smartphones and the Internet in particular. Some indicate that increased access to the virtual world has reduced people’s social skills, levels of empathy, brain capacity, and ability to concentrate, simultaneously allowing them to uncontrollably spread negativity and aggressiveness online. Others state that the mentioned aspects should be viewed from the positive side: individuals are not less socialized, empathetic, or engaged, but the ways they communicate, show emotions, and stay focused have changed.

Writing a product review of an item you have purchased and used can be a great way to share useful information with other shoppers, promote products you love, or just build your writing portfolio. One can review almost any product - from an electric toothbrush to a new hybrid car. However, the internet is inundated with product reviews, many of which offer only glowing praise or bitter criticism and are not useful to the average consumer. A good product review is based on research and knowledge of a product, and a balanced assessment of its benefits and flaws. Continue reading for tips on how to write a helpful product review.

Sample Product Review and Writing Help

essay gadget review

Getting to Know the Product

Step 1 Research the product.

  • Read the manufacturer's website, as well as any manufacturer information included with the product you are reviewing. Beware of publicity material released by manufacturers and retailers - readers will often stop reading if they sense that publicity material is being used rather than observations drawn from real-life experience.
  • Look into the competition and research the benefits and flaws of products that consumers consider alternatives. This will allow you to compare and contrast the reviewed product with the often numerous alternative products on the market. [1] X Research source [2] X Research source

Step 2 Obtain the product.

  • If you have a blog and wish to post reviews, contact companies through e-mail, a phone call, or even traditional mail. Make sure to be upfront about the type of blog you write and the traffic it receives, and keep your message short and to the point.
  • Larger companies may employ a marketing or sales representative. If this is the case, contact the appropriate representative and pitch your review directly to them. [3] X Research source

Step 3 Use the product.

  • Fake reviews that are full of exaggerated praise or criticism are widespread on the internet, and most people will stop reading a review if they suspect it is written with ulterior motives. A genuine appraisal of a product is the best way to draw a reader's attention. [4] X Research source [5] X Research source
  • Providing a photograph or video of your interaction with the product will demonstrate to your readers that you have actually used it, and will lend credibility to the review. [6] X Research source

Step 4 Know what readers are looking for.

  • Is the product easy to use?
  • Is it of high quality?
  • Is it geared towards somebody like me?
  • Have others had a good experience with the product?
  • What are the pros and cons of the product?
  • What alternatives are available, and how do they measure up?
  • Is the product worth my money? [7] X Research source

Writing a Product Review

Step 1 Write the introduction.

  • For first-time users, dedicate some space to explaining the functionality of the product in some detail, treating the product as if all the features are new. Teaching new customers about a product is an important aspect of a product review.
  • For experienced consumers, focus on the evolution of a product from one model to the next, as well as any common defects or problems users may have encountered in the past. Long-time users of a product will often read reviews for solutions to problems, giving you a chance to demonstrate your knowledge of a product. [8] X Research source

Step 2 Describe the product under review.

  • Make sure to clearly explain how you arrived at your judgments, and specifically address why you believe certain features are beneficial and why you consider other's flaws.
  • Most people will be looking for an unbiased review of a product, and thus a clearly explained, balanced review is more likely to be read than a review that focuses too much on the positive or negative aspects of a product (unless warranted, of course).

Step 4 Compare and contrast products.

  • This is particularly important for first-time buyers who may require a point of reference before deciding to purchase.

Step 5 Pinpoint the target audience.

  • Points of interest may include how easy or difficult the product is to use, specific features that will appeal to particular audiences, as well as how the product relates to other products readers may have used in the past.

Step 6 Write the conclusion.

  • Allow some time to pass between the release of a product and the publishing of your review. This will allow you time to properly test the product and arrive at an honest evaluation. Readers will more often trust a reviewer who can demonstrate that they have spent some time with a product before offering a review.

  • Use your own voice. No need to be overly formal. A coherent, conversational tone is just fine. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
  • Do not use a negative review instead of a Bug Report for an app, especially if you are getting something for free. Instead, write a note to developers who can get something fixed without disparaging an otherwise good application. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
