Research: Joint Ventures that Keep Evolving Perform Better

Summary .
Partnerships and joint ventures are an important source of revenue and innovation for many large companies, particularly in areas of emerging technology. New research shows that companies that restructure a large percentage of partnerships show better financial returns. Companies creating new partnerships should take steps to allow for future restructuring.
Successful companies actively manage their businesses through periods of economic growth, downturn, and recovery. They do so by innovating, making strategic shifts, rewiring existing operations, reallocating resources, entering new business lines, and restructuring existing ones.

Success factors for managing international joint ventures: a review and an integrative framework.

International joint ventures (IJV) are an important organizational mode for expanding and sustaining global business and have been of special relevance for the emerging Chinese market for decades. While IJVs offer specific economic advantages they also present serious management problems that lead to high failure rates, especially in developing countries. Because of the strategic relevance of IJVs and corresponding management challenges, research on success factors for managing IJVs in China has received broad attention, resulting in a variety of studies. However, there are no conceptual syntheses of the literature to date and further development in the field is hampered by both a lack of consolidation of what is known and identification of viable avenues for future research. We address this gap by building on existing concepts in the field, developing them further and synthesizing them into an integrative, theory-based framework of IJV success factors. We use this framework to systematically depict the results of both empirical studies related to Sino-foreign IJVs and to IJVs in general. Finally, we draw important implications from the research and propose potential paths for future study.

International Joint Ventures and Internal Technology Transfer vs. External Technology Spillovers: Evidence from China
We study the economics of international joint ventures using administrative data for China. We first show that foreign investors choose Chinese partners that are relatively large, productive, and more innovative to set up their joint venture. Using a difference-in-differences framework and accounting for these selection effects, we then provide evidence that joint ventures lead to domestic benefits in the form of productivity and technological spillovers to both the Chinese partners in joint ventures as well as other domestic Chinese firms. Exploiting the easing of joint venture requirements as China entered the WTO in the year 2001, we further show that intra-industry spillovers from joint ventures to other domestic firms increased in the wake of China’s WTO accession, consistent with gains from foreign technology rising due to enhanced commitment through the rules-based WTO system. Our results shed new light on the efficacy of FDI performance requirements as well as on claims regarding international technology transfer that underpinned the China-US trade war.

SLB Capturi Is The New Name Of Joint Venture Between SLB And Aker Carbon Capture
After announcing the closing of their joint venture in June 2024, SLB and Aker Carbon Capture have now shared that their new company will operate under the name SLB Capturi.
Combining valuable know-how from both its founders, SLB Capturi will focus on further development of large-scale carbon capture solutions applicable in various industrial sectors.
To that end, the company will leverage its portfolio of modular technologies, including the Just Catch™ and Big Catch™ systems, offering support in the form of equipment, turn-key projects, or process design packages.
These solutions have been tested with flue gas from diverse industrial sources to ensure their applicability and efficiency across different industries.
Egil Fagerland , CEO of SLB Capturi, commented on the new announcement, “Our mission at SLB Capturi is to deliver impact at scale with carbon capture as a critical pathway to net zero. With our proven, cost-effective technologies and modular approach, we’re enabling industries to integrate carbon capture into their existing operations, driving significant carbon reduction and removal.”
As the company prepares for further advancement and innovations in the field of carbon capture, it has already managed to collaborate with multiple meaningful projects across Europe, supporting them in their decarbonization operations.
One such project is located in Brevik, Norway, where each year 400,000 tonnes of CO2 will be captured from a cement plant and shipped for permanent storage. SLB Capturi has also provided five Just Catch systems to Ørsted , who will use the technology on two biomass-to-energy sites in Kalundborg, Denmark, with a design capacity of up to 500,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.

Another waste-to-energy plant, developed by Twence in Hengelo, Netherlands, will also use technology by SLB Capturi, where 100,000 tonnes of CO2 will be captured every year, a majority of which will then be delivered in liquid form to the local horticulture sector.
Last month, SLB Capturi was awarded a FEED study contract by CO280 for a large-scale CO2 capture plant at a pulp and paper facility in the U.S. Aiming to remove 800,000 tonnes of carbon per year, the testing unit is expected to be deployed at the site during this fall.
