Network marketing is a business model that generates sales through independent representatives who build a network of business partners or salespeople to assist with lead generation and closing. Network marketing is also known as multilevel marketing (MLM) , cellular marketing, affiliate marketing , consumer-direct marketing, referral marketing, or home-based business franchising.
Key Takeaways
- Network marketing representatives typically require strong sales skills.
- A single-tier program involves one individual salesperson who sells products independently.
- A multi-tier program requires sales representatives to recruit a network of other salespeople.
- MLM salespeople are pressured to aggressively target their friends and family, not only to buy their products but also to recruit them as new salespeople.
Network marketing firms seek to leverage the relationships of their salespeople to identify customers and market their products. It's an alternative to or done in addition to more traditional advertising and marketing strategies. Salespeople are pressured to aggressively target their friends and family, not only to buy their products but also to recruit them as new salespeople.
Each sales representative is encouraged to recruit a network of salespeople in a typical network marketing arrangement, resulting in multiple tiers of recruits. The creators of a new tier or "upline" earn commission on their sales and on sales made by the people in the tier they created, the "downline."
Each new tier can sprout another tier and this adds more commission to those in the top and middle tiers. The earnings of salespeople depend on recruitment as well as product sales. Those in the top tier make the most.
Network marketing has been compared to pyramid schemes, particularly with regard to the focus on recruiting new distributors. The Federal Trade Commission has warned that many multi-level marketing firms may be pyramid schemes but it stopped short of saying that the model is inherently fraudulent.
Some MLM schemes may be run as pyramid schemes . A pyramid scheme funnels earnings from all recruited participants on the lower levels of an organization to those on higher levels. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) monitors businesses that operate as multi-level marketing companies.
Examples of Network Marketing
An individual with a lot of energy and good sales skills can create a profitable business with a modest investment in the network marketing space. An operation that ensures compensation based on actual sales to real customers tends to be more reputable than multi-tier schemes in which people make money based on the number of distributors they recruit, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) .
The FTC settled a suit with Herbalife in 2016, alleging that the company deceived consumers into believing they could earn money selling diet, nutritional supplements, and personal care products. Herbalife paid $200 million to compensate consumers and restructured its business.
Skin care provider Rodan and Fields operated as a billion-dollar business in the MLM space before 2024. The company moved away from the multilevel direct business model and established a new affiliate program due to increased online marketing and shops like Amazon or TikTok Shop. Â
How Should an Individual Research a Network Marketing Company?
Anyone considering joining a network marketing operation should independently use or be enthusiastic about the products. They should familiarize themselves with the company structure and be sure that the position is to earn commissions based on selling products and not recruiting others.
What Are Some of the Oldest Network Marketing Programs?
Some of the oldest network marketing companies still exist in 2024. Avon was founded in 1886. Tupperware was established in 1946. Amway began in 1959.
What Are "Buyback Provisions" in Network Marketing?
âBuyback provisionsâ allow participants to return unsold products to an MLM for a refund. This Federal Trade Commission mandate benefits sales representatives with too much inventory who can't earn commissions.
The Federal Trade Commission helps to regulate the operations of network marketing organizations. Network marketing may involve multilevel marketing (MLM), cellular marketing, affiliate marketing, consumer-direct marketing, referral marketing, or home-based business franchising.

8. Network Marketing Training: Leveraging Social
Using social media as a part of our everyday routine is now commonplace.
Have you ever considered utilizing social to upgrade your MLM abilities?
Thatâs right.
Platforms like Facebook are not just for sharing cute cat videos. MLM Facebook posts like these will help you sell professionally on the platform.
According to recent statistics, social media is the #1 activity on the web , surpassing even Google traffic.
9. Social Media Training = Power Of Networks
Platforms like Facebook, TikTok, or Instagram are the best places to start when building a new MLM business. That said, proper social media training is essential for the successful use of these networks.
This training teaches you how to use little 15-second videos to sell MLM on TikTok, IG, and other networks.

People trust recommendations from their friends on social more than traditional advertising methods.
âOver 80% of people have purchased products straight from social media content.
This makes social platforms perfect for promoting products or your MLM business opportunity.
11. Power of Social Proof
Testimonials, before-and-after pictures, and success stories go over well on social.
Donât directly sell or recruit on TikTok or Instagram. Instead, post social proof to demonstrate the results of your products or opportunity.
Hereâs an example of the wrong way to do this:
12. Network Marketing Training: Common Mistakes
Watch out for those sneaky pitfalls that can trip up even the most dedicated network marketer.
Here is some network marketing training to avoid common missteps I made on my way to building a large downline.
13. Treating Multi-Level Marketing Like a Hobby
The first big mistake is treating your MLM business like a hobby instead of a real job.
Consistency and dedication are key ingredients for success.
This isnât about dipping your toes. Itâs time to dive right into this pool of opportunity.
Need help avoiding such blunders? I highly recommend going through our 5-Day Bootcamp. These video micro-trainings offer free and invaluable insights.
14. Neglecting Personal Development
Another misstep many budding MLMers make is neglecting their personal development.
In an industry as dynamic as multi-level marketing, staying stagnant is akin to moving backward.
Donât just learn how to sell products.
Hone your leadership skills.
Get better at time management.
15. Bad Communication Skills
The third error I often see involves failing at effective communication.
But let me tell you something funny:
Folks tend to get tangled up trying to sound smart when simplicity wins every time.
Itâs all about relating with people on a human level, sharing stories from your heart that resonate with others.
16. Not Leveraging Business Technology
There are still MLM leaders stuck in 1986 when it comes to building a network marketing team and selling products.
They only teach warm market methods.
This type of network marketing training is like trying to start a fire with sticks.
You can.
But why would you when better options exist?
Any network marketing training program you decide to invest in must teach:
- Online marketing methods
- Social media marketing
- Email marketing
- Website/blogging techniques
- Artificial intelligence (AI)
Big Tip: Donât become AI-drunk. You can use stuff like ChatGPT as tools to speed up your marketing tasks. Never use it in replacement of your human touch.
17. Learning from Successful Network Marketing Leaders
The journey to becoming a successful network marketer is often filled with twists and turns. Though it may be challenging, success in direct sales is achievable with the right guidance. Books written by successful MLM leaders can give you the roadmap you need.
In these books, industry leaders share their success storiesâfailures turned into lessons learnedâand provide insights that might just save your business some serious growing pains. After all, thereâs nothing like learning from those whoâve already walked the path.
18. Deep Dive Into Their Journey
Youâll find yourself immersed in tales of resilience and innovation as they recount how they started off as newbies before making it big. They faced rejections, battled skepticism, but persevered because of their unwavering belief in this business model.
They didnât start out as leaders. They grew into that role through hard work and commitment .
This gives hopeâŠthat one day you too can share your story on the big stage.
19. Golden Nuggets Within Their Words
No two journeys are identical.
Each leader brings something unique to the tableâtheir style of communication, negotiation skills or even social media strategy.
These real-life examples are much more impactful than theoretical knowledge.
Picking up tips from these narratives can significantly improve your marketing and sales skills while also helping avoid common pitfalls along the way.

Network marketing involves direct sales and earning commissions from personal sales and recruits.
Investigate the company’s history, product quality, pay structure, and support.
Ensure the focus is on selling products, not just recruitment.
Familiarize yourself with state laws and FTC guidelines to avoid legal issues.
Choose a company that offers strong training and continuous support.
Make an informed choice to ensure a successful and ethical network marketing experience.
Network marketing, also known as multi-level marketing (MLM), is a business model where individuals sell products directly to consumers and earn commissions not only on their sales but also on the sales made by people they recruit into the business.
This approach leverages personal networks to drive growth and income opportunities. But how can you determine if this potentially lucrative business model is the right fit for you?
What is Network Marketing?
Network marketing, also known as multi-level marketing (MLM), is a business model that relies on a network of distributors to grow a business.
These distributors earn income through direct sales of products or services to consumers and by recruiting new distributors. Network marketing companies typically offer a range of products, and the business model emphasizes personal sales and recruitment.
- Types of Network Marketing
Network marketing can be divided into several types based on the structure of the sales network and the compensation plan. The primary types are Single-Tier, Two-Tier, and Multi-Level Marketing (MLM).
1. Single-Tier
Single-tier network marketing is the simplest form. In this model, participants earn commissions only from the direct sales of products or services they make.
There is no recruitment involved, and income is solely based on personal sales efforts. This model is straightforward and easy to manage, making it ideal for those who prefer a direct approach to sales without the complexities of building a downline.
2. Two-Tier
Two-tier network marketing introduces a small layer of complexity compared to the single-tier model. In this structure, participants earn commissions not only from their direct sales but also from the sales made by the distributors they personally recruit.
This creates an incentive for recruiting new members while still focusing primarily on personal sales. The two-tier model offers a balanced approach, combining direct sales with the benefits of having a small team.

3. Multi-Level Marketing (MLM)
Multi-level marketing (MLM) is the most complex and widely recognized type of network marketing. In an MLM structure, participants earn commissions from their sales and the sales made by their recruits, known as their downline.
This can extend to multiple levels, allowing for a potentially significant income if the network grows.
MLM emphasizes both direct sales and recruitment, with income generated from a large, expanding network. Participants often receive training and support to help them succeed in building their business.
How Network Marketing Works?
Network marketing operates through a unique business model that leverages a network of independent distributors. Here’s a detailed look at its key components:
- 1. The Business Structure
In network marketing, the business structure is designed to create a hierarchy of independent distributors. Each distributor is responsible for selling products or services directly to consumers and recruiting new distributors to expand the network.
Independent Distributors
Independent distributors are the backbone of network marketing. They purchase products at wholesale prices and sell them at retail prices, earning a profit on each sale.
Additionally, they recruit new distributors into their downline, creating a multi-level structure where each distributor earns commissions based on the sales of their recruits.
Lead Generation, Recruiting, and Building/Managing a Network
Success in network marketing relies heavily on lead generation and recruiting. Distributors use various methods to find potential customers and recruits, including online marketing, social media, and personal networks.
Once recruited, new distributors receive training and support to help them build and manage their own networks.
Effective management involves regular communication, motivation, and providing resources to ensure the network’s growth and productivity.
- 2. Compensation Plans
Network marketing offers several compensation plans to reward distributors. These plans determine how commissions and bonuses are distributed within the network.
Binary Plan
The binary plan requires distributors to recruit two individuals, forming two legs, or teams. Commissions are earned based on the sales volume of the weaker leg, encouraging balanced growth in both teams. This plan offers potential for rapid growth and significant earnings through team-building.
Matrix Plan
In a matrix plan, distributors are limited to a certain number of recruits per level, creating a fixed-width and depth structure, such as a 3×3 matrix.
Earnings are generated from the sales of distributors within the matrix, promoting steady, controlled growth. This plan can simplify network management and ensure even distribution of recruits.
Unilevel Plan
The unilevel plan allows distributors to recruit an unlimited number of individuals directly under them. Commissions are earned based on sales volume at different levels, usually with higher percentages for direct recruits and lower percentages for deeper levels. This plan provides flexibility and rewards active recruiting and sales efforts.
Stairstep Breakaway Plan
The stairstep breakaway plan features rank advancements based on personal and team sales volume. As distributors achieve higher ranks, they break away from their upline and form their own independent units.
This plan motivates distributors to continuously strive for higher sales and leadership roles, with potential for significant earnings at higher ranks.
Pros and Cons of Network Marketing
Low startup costs.
One of the significant advantages of network marketing is the low startup costs. Unlike traditional businesses that require substantial capital for inventory, rent, and other overheads, network marketing allows you to start your business with a relatively small investment.
This makes it accessible for individuals who want to become entrepreneurs without the burden of large financial commitments.
Flexibility and Potential for Passive Income
Network marketing offers flexibility that is hard to find in traditional employment. You can set your own hours and work at your own pace, making it ideal for people with other commitments such as a full-time job or family.
Additionally, there is potential for passive income. As you build a network of distributors and customers, you can earn commissions on their sales, which can lead to a steady stream of income even when you are not actively working.
Personal Development and Skill Acquisition
Engaging in network marketing often involves personal development and acquiring valuable skills. This includes sales techniques , public speaking, leadership, and interpersonal communication.
These skills are not only beneficial for your network marketing business but also transferable to other areas of your professional and personal life.
Stigma and Misconceptions
Despite its potential benefits, network marketing suffers from a stigma and several misconceptions. Many people associate it with pyramid schemes or scams, which can make it challenging to recruit new members and sell products.
Overcoming this negative perception requires considerable effort and transparency about the business model and product quality.
Financial Risks and Upfront Costs
While the initial investment is generally low, there are still financial risks and upfront costs involved in network marketing. This can include purchasing starter kits, training materials, or inventory.
If the business does not take off, these costs can add up, leading to financial strain. Additionally, achieving substantial income often requires ongoing investment in marketing and personal development.
High Dropout Rates and Dependency on Recruitment
Network marketing has a high dropout rate, with many individuals leaving the business within the first few months. This is often due to unrealistic expectations and the difficulty of building a profitable network.
Moreover, the success of your business is heavily dependent on recruitment. Without a continuous influx of new members and customers, sustaining growth and income becomes challenging. This dependency can lead to frustration and burnout for many network marketers.
How to Get Success in Network Marketing?
- Choosing the Right Network Marketing Company
Factors to Consider
- Product Quality: Ensure the products offered by the company are of high quality and have a demand in the market. Quality products not only build trust with customers but also make it easier to sell.
- Compensation Plan: Analyze the compensation plan thoroughly. A good plan should offer a fair and transparent way to earn commissions. Look for multiple income streams like bonuses, residual income, and incentives.
- Company Reputation: Research the companyâs history and reputation. Check for positive reviews , longevity in the market, and any past controversies. A reputable company is more likely to provide stability and support.
Avoiding Pyramid Schemes
- Red Flags: Be wary of companies that emphasize recruitment over product sales. If the primary focus is on enrolling new members rather than selling products, it might be a pyramid scheme. Other red flags include promises of high returns with little effort and lack of transparency in the compensation plan.
- Marketing and Sales Strategies for Network Marketers
- Utilizing Social Media Platforms: Social media is a powerful tool for network marketers. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn allow you to reach a broad audience. Share engaging content, participate in groups, and connect with potential customers and recruits.
- Building Relationships and Networking: Network marketing is all about relationships. Focus on building genuine connections rather than just selling. Attend events, join local networking groups, and nurture your relationships with regular follow-ups and personalized communication.
- Content Marketing Strategies: Create valuable content that addresses the needs and interests of your target audience. Use blogs, videos, and social media posts to educate and inform. Content marketing helps establish you as an authority in your niche and attracts potential customers and recruits.
- Importance of Customer Service in Network Marketing
- Customer Service: Providing excellent customer service is crucial for success in network marketing. Happy customers are more likely to become repeat buyers and refer others to your business. Ensure you are responsive, helpful, and go above and beyond to meet their needs. Good customer service builds loyalty and enhances your reputation, making it easier to grow your network and achieve long-term success.
Key Considerations Before Joining Network Marketing
- Researching Companies
Before joining any network marketing company, thorough research is crucial. Look into the companyâs history and the value of its products. A reputable company will have a solid track record and high-quality products that genuinely benefit consumers.
Evaluate how the company distributes pay and its overall integrity. Ensure that the compensation plan is fair and that the company is transparent about how distributors are rewarded.
Consider the level of support and training offered. A good network marketing company will provide comprehensive training and continuous support to help you succeed.
- Legal and Ethical Aspects
It’s important to be aware of the legal and ethical aspects of network marketing. One major red flag is pyramid schemes, which are illegal and often disguised as legitimate network marketing opportunities.
These schemes focus more on recruitment rather than selling products, which is unsustainable and unethical. Understand the state laws and guidelines set by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
Familiarize yourself with these regulations to ensure the company operates legally and ethically. By following these key considerations, you can make a more informed decision and avoid potential pitfalls in the network marketing industry.
Network marketing offers a unique opportunity to earn income through direct sales and recruitment. It’s essential to understand how it works and what to look for in a company. Thorough research and awareness of legal guidelines can help you choose a reputable and ethical company. With the right approach, network marketing can be a rewarding venture.

1. Building and Maintaining Trust
In a field such as network marketing, building and maintaining trust are some of the key components to being successful. Trust is an intangible asset that keeps everyone working towards a common goal and benefits each party. Without it, you wonât be able to move up the ladder. Not only do you have to build trust within your network but you also have to develop it with potential clients.
When including this topic in your training program, take note of multilevel marketing (mlm tools) you can use, and key strategies and techniques you can implement in your day-to-day interactions. SC Training (formerly EdApp)âs Building and Maintaining Trust course lists down some of their best practices that you can follow. For example, you need to learn how to own up to your own shortcomings when you make a mistake. What makes this course stand out among the others is SC Training (formerly EdApp)âs microlearning format. If not, then this is another network marketing training topic to add to your list.
Learning about how to manage difficult conversations can help you navigate through them with ease and offer solutions that benefit you and the other party. 3. Effective Communication
Communication is key in everything, but most especially, in network marketing. As a network marketer, youâre expected to present â almost on a daily â to new hires, co-workers, clients, and higher-ups. If you donât know how to effectively get your message across, you can end up losing a ton of potential deals or amazing new talent. Thatâs why adding this network marketing training topic is crucial for your training needs.Â
SC Training (formerly EdApp)âs customizable course on effective communication can help you get started on your training. The course includes lessons on the different scenarios you encounter in a workday and how to communicate effectively in each of them. It talks about how to speak publicly and effectively and how to connect during remote meetings.Â
4. Competitive Analysis
Knowing your competition can help you get ahead in network marketing. This means conducting a regular competitor analysis to identify how your products are different from the rest and what makes them special. Competitor analysis can also give you ideas for how to upsell and provide better value to your clients when they purchase your product. This is why adding competitive analysis as a network marketing training topic will help you sell your products like hotcakes.
If youâre looking for where to start on this network marketing training topic, you can use SC Training (formerly EdApp)âs Competitive Landscapes as your jumping point. What makes this course particularly interesting is it has gamified quizzes built in. These interactive quizzes can help you retain information better and make training a lot more fun and a lot less boring.
5. Closing a Deal
Closing deals is both a craft that you need to perfect and a science you have to learn. To be a successful network marketer, you need to be able to understand the other personâs objectives, deliver a compelling offer, and address any objections. âThe finest negotiations are when both sides feel just a little discomfort and awkwardness,â says Marcus Lemonis , CEO of Camping World. This means that each party will most likely have to make some concessions in order to make the deal work for everyone. When closing deals, you need to be able to identify the best moments to ask and use closing techniques. Thatâs why adding this network marketing training topic is important for your development in the industry.

Even network marketing ideas and tricks that you learned a month ago might already be ancient. Thatâs why if thereâs one thing you need in your training program, itâs learning the language of sales.
This network marketing training topic will help you develop convincing arguments, handle difficult sales situations, and develop better relationships with clients. SC Training (formerly EdApp) has a wonderful course that discusses all of these topics called, The Language of Sales . This network marketing training topic helps you better understand your target market, increase sales, and drive business growth. You can check out SC Training (formerly EdApp)âs Knowing Your Market course to get started on market research training.
9. Solution SellingÂ
Solution Selling is a sales approach where instead of focusing on product features, you collaborate with a client to spot and define their needs before offering your product. That way, youâll be able to sell your product as a customized solution to their needs instead of a one-size-fits-all solution. By adding this as a network marketing training topic, youâll be able to understand how your product can solve peopleâs problems and create more revenue as a result. If youâre looking for a beginner-friendly course, SC Training (formerly EdApp)âs Solution Selling Strategy course is the best place to start.
10. Upselling
Upselling is a sales technique in which you convince a client to buy a better and more costly option for the product youâre initially promoting to them. Instead of only selling 1 product, youâre also presenting clients with more options that can suit their goals and objectives far more successfully than if they stick with their first buy. Giving clients more appealing options enhances their experience with you. Theyâll be more willing to place more faith in you the next time, since your product is more customized to their needs. As a result, youâre able to cultivate better relationships with them, make more appealing offers, and gain more profit. Thatâs why upselling is one network marketing training topic you shouldnât miss out on.

Network Marketing in Business: Complete Guide
Stuart Crawford
Network marketing, or multi-level marketing (MLM), is a business model that has gained popularity in recent years. It relies on individuals using their networks to sell products or recruit customers and partners. The concept has a long history dating back to the 1800s, with companies like Nutrilite and Amway pioneering the MLM industry. Today, network marketing companies exist in various sectors, allowing individuals to work from home and earn an income based on their sales and downline sales.
One of the main benefits of network marketing is the flexibility it offers. Unlike traditional employment, network marketing allows individuals to set their schedule and work at their own pace. This can particularly appeal to those who value work-life balance or have other commitments. Additionally, network marketing allows individuals to sell products they are passionate about. Whether health and wellness products, beauty and skincare, or household goods, a wide range of products is available in the industry – this enables individuals to align their business with their interests and values.
Furthermore, network marketing allows one to expand one's network and benefit from mentorship. Building relationships with like-minded individuals who share the same goals and aspirations can be incredibly valuable. These connections can lead to business opportunities and provide a support system. Experienced mentors can offer guidance and support, sharing their knowledge and expertise to help others succeed in marketing. Surrounding oneself with a strong network of mentors and peers can be a game-changer in this industry.
How Network Marketing Works
Different types of network marketing include MLM, direct marketing, and affiliate marketing . MLM is the most common form, where distributors earn money from their sales as well as the sales of their downline. In direct marketing, individuals focus solely on selling products without recruiting others. On the other hand, affiliate marketing involves promoting products or services through online platforms and earning a commission for each sale made through their referral.
Finding your passion and choosing quality products is essential to succeed. When considering a network marketing opportunity, it's necessary to evaluate the age and integrity of the company. Research the company's track record, financial stability, and reputation in the industry. Additionally, consider the value of the product or service being offered. Is it unique? Does it solve a problem or fulfil a need? These factors help determine if the opportunity aligns with your goals and values.
Building solid relationships is a vital aspect of marketing success. Trust is the foundation of any relationship, and it is essential to establish trust with both customers and potential business partners. Providing value to your network is crucial. This can be done through educational content, sharing personal experiences, or offering exceptional customer service. By consistently delivering value, you build credibility and loyalty within your network.
Patience is also crucial. Building a successful network takes time and effort. Setting realistic expectations and not getting discouraged if results don't come immediately is essential. Consistency and perseverance are crucial. Treat your network marketing business like any other and invest the time and resources to grow it.
Network Marketing vs Pyramid Scheme
It is crucial to understand the distinction between network marketing and pyramid schemes. Network marketing is a legitimate business model that relies on selling products or services. Distributors earn money from their sales as well as the sales of their downline. Pyramid schemes, on the other hand, focus primarily on recruitment, with little emphasis on product sales. Pyramid schemes are illegal in many countries, as they are unsustainable and often result in financial loss for participants.
In network marketing, sincerity and genuine enthusiasm for the product or service are vital. Believing in what you are selling and being transparent with your customers and potential business partners is essential. You can establish a strong reputation and attract like-minded individuals to your network by being genuine and building trust.
Before getting involved, it's important to research state laws and regulations regarding the industry. Understand the legal requirements and ensure that the company you are considering aligns with these regulations. This will help protect you from legal issues and provide you with a legitimate business opportunity.
Training and Resources for Network Marketing
Mentorship plays a significant role in network marketing. Many marketing companies offer training programs and resources to support their distributors. These resources can include product information, sales techniques, personal development training, and more. Take advantage of these resources and continuously invest in your knowledge and skills. Attend training events, webinars, and conferences to stay updated on industry trends and best practices.
In addition to company-provided resources, many external resources are available to network marketers. Books, podcasts, and online courses can provide valuable insights and strategies to help you succeed in your business. Seek out industry leaders and experts who share their knowledge in these mediums.
Types of Network Marketing
There are different types of marketing structures. Single-tier marketing involves individuals selling products directly to customers. In this model, distributors earn commissions based solely on their sales. Two-tier marketing adds another level: individuals can recruit others to join the network. In this case, distributors earn commissions from their and recruits' sales. Multi-tier marketing, also known as MLM, involves multiple levels of distributors, with distributors earning commissions from their downline sales.
When considering which type of marketing structure to pursue, evaluating your strengths and preferences is essential. Some individuals may thrive in a single-tier model, focusing solely on their sales. Others may enjoy the challenge of building a team and earning commissions from the efforts of their downline. Consider your goals, skills, and personal preferences when selecting the network marketing structure that aligns best with your strengths.

Comparative analysis between snort and suricata IDS software(s)
Description of the topic
The main focus of this research is to conduct a comparative analysis between Snort and Suricata software to determine which IDS software can provide better performance. There are various IDS software(s) available that can be used by organizations but it is difficult to identify which one is best (Aldarwbi et al., 2022). Different organizational structures are often facing problems while setting up an IDS system which results in false positives and intrusions. Through this research, it can be identified which IDS software is better and what secure configuration is required to detect intrusions (Waleed et al., 2022).
Research objectives
- To evaluate Snort and Suricata IDS software(s) to determine the most optimal one.
- To identify the false positive rate of Snort and Suricata on the networked environment.
Research questions
RQ1: Which IDS software can perform better on the production network in terms of performance, security, scalability and reliability?
RQ2: What different ways can be followed to deal with false positive problems in IDS technology?
Research methodology
The given research objectives and research questions can be addressed using quantitative research methodology where an experimental approach can be followed. For the given topic, both Snort and Suricata IDS systems should be configured and tested against different attacks. Depending on the findings, it can be analyzed which IDS software can perform better in terms of performance and security (Shuai & Li, 2021).

Role of honeypots and honey nets in network security
Network Security has become essential nowadays and there is a need for setting up robust mechanisms to maintain confidentiality and integrity (Feng et al., 2023). Due to the number of security mechanisms available, organizations found it hard to finalize and implement them on their network. For example, honey pots and honeynet approaches look almost the same and have the same purpose but work differently. Under this research topic, the configuration of honeynets and honeypots can be done to check which one can perform better security in terms of trapping cyber attackers. The entire implementation can be carried out in the cloud-based instance for improved security and it can be identified which type of honey pot technology must be preferred (Maesschalck et al., 2022).
- To set up a honey pot system using Open Canary on the virtual instance to protect against cyber attackers.
- To set up a honeynet system on the virtual instance to assure protection is provided against malicious attackers.
- To test honeypots and honeynets by executing DDoS attacks to check which can provide better security.
RQ1: Why is there a need for using honeypots over honey pots in a production networked environment?
RQ2: What are the differences between cloud-based and local honey pot systems for endpoint protection?
This research can be carried out using the quantitative method of research. At the initial stage, the implementation of honeypots and honeypots can be done on the virtual instance following different security rules. Once the rules are applied, the testing can be performed using a Kali Linux machine to check whether honey pots were effective or honeynets (Gill et al., 2020).

How do malware variants are progressively improving?
This research can be based on evaluating how malware variants are progressively improving and what should be its state in the coming future. Malware is able to compromise confidential user’s information assets which is why this research can be based on identifying current and future consequences owing to its improvements (Deng et al., 2023). In this field, there is no research work that has been carried out to identify how malware variants are improving their working and what is expected to see in future. Once the evaluation is done, a clear analysis can also be done on some intelligent preventive measures to deal with dangerous malware variants and prevent any kind of technological exploitation (Tang et al., 2023).
- To investigate types of malware variants available to learn more about malware's hidden features.
- To focus on future implications of malware executable programs and how they can be avoided.
- To discuss intelligent solutions to deal with all malware variants.
RQ1: How do improvements in malware variants impact enterprises?
RQ2: What additional solutions are required to deal with malware variants?
In this research, qualitative analysis can be conducted on malware variants and the main reason behind their increasing severity. The entire research can be completed based on qualitative research methodology to answer defined research questions and objectives. Some real-life case studies should also be integrated into the research which can be supported by the selected topic (Saidia Fasci et al., 2023).

Implementation of IoT - enabled smart office/home using cisco packet tracer
The Internet of Things has gained much more attention over the past few years which is why each enterprise and individual aims at setting up an IoT network to automate their processes (Barriga et al., 2023). This research can be based on designing and implementing an IoT-enabled smart home/office network using Cisco Packet Tracer software. Logical workspace, all network devices, including IoT devices can be used for preparing a logical network star topology (Elias & Ali, 2014). To achieve automation, the use of different IoT rules can be done to allow devices to work based on defined rules.
- To set up an IoT network on a logical workspace using Cisco Packet Tracer simulation software.
- To set up IoT-enabled rules on an IoT registration server to achieve automation (Hou et al., 2023).
RQ: Why is the Cisco packet tracer preferred for network simulation over other network simulators?
At the beginning of this research, a quantitative research methodology can be followed where proper experimental set-up can be done. As a packet tracer is to be used, the star topology can be used to interconnect IoT devices, sensors and other network devices at the home/office. Once a placement is done, the configuration should be done using optimal settings and all IoT devices can be connected to the registration server. This server will have IoT rules which can help in achieving automation by automatically turning off lights and fans when no motion is detected (Baggan et al., 2022).

Comparative analysis between AODV, DSDV and DSR routing protocols in WSN networks
For wireless sensor networks (WSN), there is a major need for using WSN routing rather than performing normal routines. As WSN networks are self-configured, there is a need for an optimal routing protocol that can improve network performance in terms of latency, jitter, and packet loss (Luo et al., 2023). There are often various problems faced when WSN networks are set up due to a lack of proper routing protocol selection. As a result of this, severe downtime is faced and all links are not able to communicate with each other easily (Hemanand et al., 2023). In this research topic, the three most widely used WSN routing protocols AODV, DSDV and DSR can be compared based on network performance. To perform analysis, three different scenarios can be created in network simulator 2 (Ns2).
- To create three different scenarios on ns2 software to simulate a network for 1 to 100 seconds.
- To analyze which WSN routing is optimal in terms of network performance metrics, including latency, jitter and packet loss.
- To use CBR and NULL agents for all wireless scenarios to start with simulation purposes.
RQ: How do AODV, DSR and DSDV routing protocols differ from each other in terms of network performance?
This research can be carried out using a quantitative research method. The implementation for the provided research topic can be based on Ns2 simulation software where three different scenarios can be created (AODV, DSDV and DSR). For each scenario, NULL, CSR and UDP agents can be done to start with simulation for almost 1 to 100 seconds. For all transmissions made during the given time, network performance can be checked to determine which routing is best (Mohapatra & Kanungo, 2012).

Securing wireless network using AAA authentication and WLAN controller
Wireless networks often face intrusion attempts due to insecure protocols and sometimes open SSIDs. As a result of this, man-in-the-middle and eavesdropping attacks become easier which results in the loss of confidential information assets (Sivasankari & Kamalakkannan, 2022). When it comes to managing networks in a large area, there are higher chances for attacks that enable cyber attackers in intercepting ongoing communication sessions. However, there is currently no research conducted where the use of AAA authentication has been done with WLAN controllers to make sure a higher level of protection is provided (Nashwan, 2021). The proposed research topic can be based on securing wireless networks with the help of AAA authentication and WLAN controllers. The use of AAA authentication can be done to set up a login portal for users whilst the WLAN controller can be used for managing all wireless access points connected to the network (Nashwan, 2021).
- To set up AAA authentication service on the wireless network simulated on Cisco Packet Tracer for proper access control.
- To set up a WLAN controller on the network to manage all wireless access points effortlessly.
- To use WPA2-PSK protocol on the network to assure guest users are only able to access wireless networks over a secure protocol.
RQ1: What additional benefits are offered by AAA authentication on the WLAN networks?
RQ2: Why are wireless networks more likely to face network intrusions than wired networks?
This research topic is based on the secure implementation of a wireless LAN network using a Cisco packet tracer. Hence, this research can be carried out using a quantitative research method. The implementation can be carried out using AAA authentication which can assure that access control is applied for wireless logins. On the other hand, a WLAN controller can also be configured which can ensure that all WAPs are managed (ZHANG et al., 2012).

OWASP's approach to secure web applications from web application exploits
The research can revolve around the development of web applications by considering OWASP's top 10 rules. Usually, web applications are deployed by organizations depending on their requirements and these applications are vulnerable to various exploits, including injection, broken authentication and other forgery attacks (Poston, 2020). Identifying every single vulnerability is difficult when reference is not taken and often organizations end up hosting a vulnerable server that leads to privacy issues and compromises confidential information easily. In this research, OWASP's top 10 approaches can be followed to develop a secure web application that can be able to protect against top web application exploits. This approach is based on emphasizing severe and minor vulnerabilities which must be patched for protecting against web application attacks (Deepa & Thilagam, 2016).
- The first objective can be setting up an insecure web application on the cloud environment which can be exploited with different techniques.
- The second objective can be to consider all techniques and procedures provided by OWASP's top 10 methodologies.
- The last objective can be applying all fixes to insecure web applications to make them resistant to OWASP top 10 attacks (Sonmez, 2019).
RQ1: What are the benefits of using OWASP's top 10 approaches to harden web applications in comparison to other security approaches?
The research methodology considered for this research project can be quantitative using an experimental approach. The practical work can be done for the selected topic using AWS or the Azure cloud platform. Simply, a virtual web server can be configured and set up with a secure and insecure web application. Following OWASP's top 10 techniques and procedures, the web application can be secured from possible attacks. In addition, insecure applications can also be exploited and results can be evaluated (Applebaum et al., 2021).

Importance of configuring RADIUS (AAA) server on the network
User authentication has become significant nowadays as it guarantees that a legitimate user is accessing the network. But a problem is faced when a particular security control is to be identified for authentication and authorization. These controls can be categorized based on mandatory access controls, role-based access control, setting up captive portals and many more. Despite several other security controls, one of the most efficient ones is the RADIUS server (SONG et al., 2008). This server can authenticate users on the network to make sure network resources are accessible to only legal users. This research topic can be based on understanding the importance of RADIUS servers on the network which can also be demonstrated with the help of the Cisco Packet Tracer. A network can be designed and equipped with a RADIUS server to ensure only legal users can access network resources (WANG et al., 2009).
- To configure RADIUS (AAA) server on the network which can be able to authenticate users who try to access network resources.
- To simulate a network on a packet tracer simulation software and verify network connectivity.
RQ1: What are other alternatives to RADIUS (AAA) authentication servers for network security?
RQ2: What are the common and similarities between RADIUS and TACACS+ servers?
As a logical network is to be designed and configured, a quantitative research methodology can be followed. In this research coursework, a secure network design can be done using a packet tracer network simulator, including a RADIUS server along with the DMZ area. The configuration for the RADIUS server can be done to allow users to only access network resources by authenticating and authorizing (Nugroho et al., 2022).

Comparing mod security and pF sense firewall to block illegitimate traffic
Firewalls are primarily used for endpoint security due to their advanced features ranging from blocking to IDS capabilities and many more. It is sometimes challenging to identify which type of firewall is best and due to this reason, agencies end up setting up misconfigured firewalls (Tiwari et al., 2022). This further results in a cyber breach, destroying all business operations. The research can be emphasizing conducting a comparison between the two most widely used firewalls i.e. Mod Security and pF sense. Using a virtualized environment, both firewalls can be configured and tested concerning possible cyber-attacks (Lu & Yang, 2020).
- To use the local environment to set up Mod security and pF sense firewall with appropriate access control rules.
- To test both firewalls by executing distributed denial of service attacks from a remote location.
- To compare which type of firewall can provide improved performance and robust security.
RQ: How do Mod security and pF sense differ from each other in terms of features and performance?
The practical experimentation for both firewalls can be done using a virtualized environment where two different machines can be created. Hence, this research can be carried out using a quantitative research method . The first machine can have Mod security and the second machine can have pF sense configured. A new subnet can be created which can have these two machines. The third machine can be an attacking machine which can be used for testing firewalls. The results obtained can be then evaluated to identify which firewall is best for providing security (Uçtu et al., 2021).

Conducting a comprehensive investigation on the PETYA malware
The main purpose of this research is to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the PETYA malware variant (McIntosh et al., 2021). PETYA often falls under the category of ransomware attacks which not only corrupt and encrypt files but can compromise confidential information easily. Along with PETYA, there are other variants also which lead to a security outage and organizations are not able to detect these variants due to a lack of proper detection capabilities (Singh & Singh, 2021). In this research, a comprehensive analysis has been done on PETYA malware to identify its working and severity level. Depending upon possible causes of infection of PETYA malware, some proactive techniques can also be discussed (Singh & Singh, 2021). A separation discussion can also be made on other malware variants, their features, and many more.
- The main objective of this research is to scrutinize the working of PETYA malware because a ransomware attack can impact the micro and macro environment of the organizations severely.
- The working of PETYA malware along with its source code can be reviewed to identify its structure and encryption type.
- To list all possible CVE IDs which are exploited by the PETYA malware.
RQ1: How dangerous is PETYA malware in comparison to other ransomware malware?
This research can be based on qualitative research methodology to evaluate the working of PETYA malware from various aspects, the methodology followed and what are its implications. The research can be initiated by evaluating the working of PETYA malware, how it is triggered, what encryption is applied and other factors. A sample source code can also be analyzed to learn more about how cryptography is used with ransomware (Abijah Roseline & Geetha, 2021).

Setting up a Live streaming server on the cloud platform
Nowadays, various organizations require a live streaming server to stream content depending upon their business. However, due to a lack of proper hardware, organizations are likely to face high network congestion, slowness and other problems (Ji et al., 2023). Referring to the recent cases, it has been observed that setting up a streaming server on the local environment is not expected to perform better than a cloud-based streaming server configuration (Martins et al., 2019). This particular research topic can be based on setting up a live streaming server on the AWS or Azure cloud platform to make sure high network bandwidth is provided with decreased latency. The research gap analysis would be conducted to analyze the performance of live streaming servers on local and cloud environments in terms of network performance metrics (Bilal et al., 2018).
- To set up a live streaming server on the AWS or Azure cloud platform to provide live streaming services.
- To use load balancers alongside streaming servers to ensure the load is balanced and scalability is achieved.
- To use Wireshark software to test network performance during live streaming.
RQ1: Why are in-house streaming servers not able to provide improved performance in comparison to cloud-based servers?
RQ2: What additional services are provided by cloud service providers which help in maintaining network performance?
The implementation is expected to carry out on the AWS cloud platform with other AWS services i.e. load balancer, private subnet and many more (Efthymiopoulou et al., 2017). Hence, this research can be carried out using a quantitative research method. The configuration of ec2 instances can be done which can act as a streaming server for streaming media and games. For testing this project, the use of OBS studio can be done which can help in checking whether streaming is enabled or not. For network performance, Wireshark can be used for testing network performance (George et al., 2020).

Significance of using OSINT framework for Network reconnaissance
Network reconnaissance is becoming important day by day when it comes to penetration testing. Almost all white hat hackers are dependent on the OSINT framework to start with network reconnaissance and footprinting when it comes to evaluating organizational infrastructure. On the other hand, cyber attackers are also using this technique to start fetching information about their target. Currently, there is no investigation carried out to identify how effective the OSINT framework is over traditional reconnaissance activities (Liu et al., 2022). This research is focused on using OSINT techniques to analyze victims using different sets of tools like Maltego, email analysis and many other techniques. The analysis can be based on fetching sensitive information about the target which can be used for conducting illegal activities (Abdullah, 2019).
- To use Maltego software to conduct network reconnaissance on the target by fetching sensitive information.
- To compare the OSINT framework with other techniques to analyze why it performs well.
RQ1: What is the significance of using the OSINT framework in conducting network reconnaissance?
RQ2: How can the OSINT framework be used by cyber hackers for conducting illegitimate activities?
The OSINT framework is easily accessible on its official website where different search options are given. Hence, this research can be carried out using a quantitative research method. Depending upon the selected target, each option can be selected and tools can be shortlisted for final implementation. Once the tools are shortlisted, they can be used to conduct network reconnaissance (González-Granadillo et al., 2021). For example, Maltego can be used as it is a powerful software to fetch information about the target.

Wired and wireless network hardening in cisco packet tracer
At present, network security has become essential and if enterprises are not paying attention to the security infrastructure, there are several chances for cyber breaches. To overcome all these issues, there is a need for setting up secure wired and wireless networks following different techniques such as filtered ports, firewalls, VLANs and other security mechanisms. For the practical part, the use of packet tracer software can be done to design and implement a highly secure network (Sun, 2022).
- To use packet tracer simulation software to set up secure wired and wireless networks.
- Use different hardening techniques, including access control rules, port filtering, enabling passwords and many more to assure only authorized users can access the network (Zhang et al., 2012).
RQ: Why is there a need for emphasizing wired and wireless network security?
Following the quantitative approach, the proposed research topic implementation can be performed in Cisco Packet Tracer simulation software. Several devices such as routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, hosts and workstations can be configured and interconnected using Cat 6 e cabling. For security, every device can be checked and secure design principles can be followed like access control rules, disabled open ports, passwords, encryption and many more (Smith & Hasan, 2020).

Different Preemptive ways to resist spear phishing attacks
When it comes to social engineering, phishing attacks are rising and are becoming one of the most common ethical issues as it is one of the easiest ways to trick victims into stealing information. This research topic is based on following different proactive techniques which would help in resisting spear phishing attacks (Xu et al., 2023). This can be achieved by using the Go-Phish filter on the machine which can automatically detect and alert users as soon as the phished URL is detected. It can be performed on the cloud platform where the apache2 server can be configured along with an anti-phishing filter to protect against phishing attacks (Yoo & Cho, 2022).
- To set up a virtual instance on the cloud platform with an apache2 server and anti-phishing software to detect possible phishing attacks.
- To research spear phishing and other types of phishing attacks that can be faced by victims (Al-Hamar et al., 2021).
RQ1: Are phishing attacks growing just like other cyber-attacks?
RQ2: How effective are anti-phishing filters in comparison to cyber awareness sessions?
The entire research can be conducted by adhering to quantitative research methodology which helps in justifying all research objectives and questions. The implementation of the anti-phishing filter can be done by creating a virtual instance on the cloud platform which can be configured with an anti-phishing filter. Along with this, some phishing attempts can also be performed to check whether the filter works or not (Siddiqui et al., 2022).

Evaluating the effectiveness of distributed denial of service attacks
The given research topic is based on evaluating the effectiveness of distributed denial of service attacks on cloud and local environments. Hence, this research can be carried out using a quantitative research method. Cyber attackers find DDoS as one of the most dangerous technological exploitation when it comes to impacting network availability (Krishna Kishore et al., 2023). This research can revolve around scrutinizing the impact of DDoS attacks on the local environment and cloud environment. This can be done by executing DDoS attacks on a simulated environment using hoping or other software(s) to check where it has a higher magnitude (de Neira et al., 2023).
- To set up a server on the local and cloud environment to target using DDoS attacks for checking which had experienced slowness.
- To determine types of DDoS attack types, their magnitude and possible mitigation techniques.
RQ: Why do DDoS attacks have dynamic nature and how is it likely to sternly impact victims?
The experimentation for this research can be executed by creating a server on the local and cloud environment. Hence, this research can be carried out using a quantitative research method. These servers can be set up as web servers using apache 2 service. On the other hand, a Kali Linux machine can be configured with DDoS execution software. Each server can be targeted with DDoS attacks to check its effectiveness (Benlloch-Caballero et al., 2023).

A marketing plan is a strategic road map that businesses use to organize, execute, and track their marketing strategy over a given period. Marketing plans can include different marketing strategies for various marketing teams across the company, all working toward the same business goals.
The purpose of a marketing plan is to write down strategies in an organized manner. This will help keep you on track and measure the success of your campaigns.
Your marketing plan lays out each campaignâs mission, buyer personas, budget, tactics, and deliverables. With all this information in one place, youâll have an easier time staying on track with a campaign, and you can figure out what works and what doesnât.
To learn more about creating your marketing plan, keep reading or jump to the relevant section:
A marketing plan is a strategic document that outlines marketing objectives, strategies, and tactics.
A business plan is also a strategic document. But this plan covers all aspects of a company's operations, including finance, operations, and more. It can also help your business decide how to distribute resources and make decisions as your business grows.
A marketing plan is a subset of a business plan; it shows how marketing strategies and objectives can support overall business goals. And if you need an assist executing a marketing plan, might I recommend HubSpotâs marketing hub ?
Marketing Strategy vs. Marketing Plan
A marketing strategy is the part of your marketing plan that describes how a business will accomplish a particular goal or mission.
This includes which campaigns, content, channels, and marketing software youâll use to execute that mission and track its success.
A marketing plan contains one or more marketing strategies. It's the framework from which all your marketing strategies are created, and it helps you connect each strategy to a larger marketing operation and business goal.
For example, suppose your company is launching a new software product, and it wants customers to sign up. The marketing department needs to develop a marketing plan that'll help introduce this product to the industry and drive the desired sign-ups.
The department decides to launch a topical blog, debut a YouTube series to establish expertise, and create new X and Instagram accounts to join the conversation around this subject. All this serves to attract an audience and convert this audience into software users.
To summarize, a business' marketing plan is dedicated to introducing a new software product to the marketplace and driving sign-ups for that product. The business will execute that plan with three marketing strategies : a new industry blog, a YouTube video series, and an X account.
Of course, the business might consider these three things as one giant marketing strategy, each with its own specific content strategies. How granular you want your marketing plan to get is up to you. Nonetheless, every marketing plan goes through a particular set of steps in its creation.
- State your business' mission.
- Determine the KPIs for this mission.
- Identify your buyer personas.
- Describe your content initiatives and strategies.
- Clearly define your plan's omissions.
- Define your marketing budget.
- Identify your competition.
- Outline your plan's contributors and their responsibilities.
1. State your business' mission.
Your first step in writing a marketing plan is to state your mission. Although this mission is specific to your marketing department, it should serve as your business' main mission statement.
In my experience, you want to be specific, but not too specific. You have plenty of space left in this marketing plan to elaborate on how you'll acquire new customers and accomplish this mission.
For those of you running startups or small businesses, HubSpotâs starter bundle is a great all-in-one solution â it can help you find and win customers, execute content marketing plans, and more.
If your business' mission is âto make booking travel a delightful experience,â your marketing mission might be âto attract an audience of travelers, educate them on the tourism industry, and convert them into users of our bookings platform.â

2. Determine the KPIs for this mission.
Every good marketing plan describes how the department will track its missionâs progress. To do so, you need to decide on your key performance indicators (KPIs) .
KPIs are individual metrics that measure the various elements of a marketing campaign. These units help you establish short-term goals within your mission and communicate your progress to business leaders.
Let's take our example of a marketing mission from the above step. If part of our mission is âto attract an audience of travelers,â we might track website visits using organic page views. In this case, âorganic page viewsâ is one KPI, and we can see our number of page views grow over time.
Also, make sure to check whether your current reporting software facilitates the KPIs you need. Some reporting tools can only measure a set of pre-defined metrics, which can cause massive headaches in particular marketing campaigns.
However, other tools, like HubSpotâs analytics software , can offer full flexibility over the KPIs you wish to track.
You can generate custom reports that reveal average website engagement rates, page visits, email, social media traffic, and more.
These KPIs will come into the conversation again in step 4.
3. Identify your buyer personas.
A buyer persona is a description of who you want to attract. This can include age, sex, location, family size, and job title.
Each buyer persona should directly reflect your business' current and potential customers. All business leaders must agree on your buyer personas.
4. Describe your content initiatives and strategies.
Hereâs where youâll include the main points of your marketing and content strategy.
Because thereâs a laundry list of content types and channels available today, you must choose wisely and explain how youâll use your content and channels in this section of your marketing plan.
When I write this section, I like to stipulate:
- What types of content I'll create. These might include blog posts, YouTube videos, infographics, and ebooks.
- How much I'll create. I typically describe content volume in daily, weekly, monthly, or even quarterly intervals. It all depends on my workflow and the short-term goals for my content.
- The goals (and KPIs) I'll use to track each type. KPIs can include organic traffic, social media traffic, email traffic, and referral traffic. Your goals should also include which pages you want to drive that traffic to, such as product pages, blog pages, or landing pages.
- The channels on which I'll distribute my content. Popular channels include Facebook, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, and Instagram.
- Any paid advertising that will take place on these channels.
5. Clearly define your plan's omissions.
A marketing plan explains the marketing team's focus. It also explains what the marketing team will not focus on.
If there are other aspects of your business that you arenât serving in this particular plan, include them in this section. These omissions help to justify your mission, buyer personas, KPIs, and content.
You canât please everyone in a single marketing campaign, and if your team isnât on the hook for something, you need to make it known.
In my experience, this section is particularly important for stakeholders to help them understand why certain decisions were made.
6. Define your marketing budget.
Whether it's freelance fees, sponsorships, or a new full-time marketing hire, use these costs to develop a marketing budget and outline each expense in this section of your marketing plan.
You can establish your marketing budget with these 8 free marketing budget templates .
7. Identify your competition.
Part of marketing is knowing your competition. Research the key players in your industry and consider profiling each one.
Keep in mind that not every competitor will pose the same challenges to your business. For example, while one competitor might rank highly on search engines for keywords that youâre also chasing, another competitor might have a heavy footprint on a social network where you plan to launch an account.
Easily track and analyze your competitors with this collection of 10 free competitive analysis templates .
8. Outline your plan's contributors and their responsibilities.
With your marketing plan fully fleshed out, itâs time to explain whoâs doing what.
I donât like to delve too deeply into my employeesâ day-to-day projects, but I know which teams and team leaders are in charge of specific content types, channels, KPIs, and more.
Now that you know why you need to build an effective marketing plan, itâs time to get to work.
Starting a plan from scratch can be overwhelming if you haven't done it before.
Thatâs why there are many helpful resources that can support your first steps. Weâll share some of the best guides and templates to help you build effective results-driven plans for your marketing strategies.

1. Quarterly or Annual Marketing Plans
This marketing plan by Visit Oxnard, a convention and visitors bureau, is packed with information: target markets, key performance indicators, selling points, personas, marketing tactics by channel, and much more.
It also articulates the organizationâs strategic plans for the upcoming fiscal year, especially as it grapples with the aftereffects of the pandemic.
Lastly, it has impeccable visual appeal, with color-coded sections and strong branding elements.
- It states clear and actionable goals for the coming year.
- It includes data and other research that shows how the team made its decisions.
- It outlines how the team will measure the planâs success.
4. Safe Haven Family Shelter
This marketing plan by a nonprofit organization is an excellent example to follow if your plan will be presented to internal stakeholders at all levels of your organization.
It includes SMART marketing goals , deadlines, action steps, long-term objectives, target audiences, core marketing messages , and metrics.
The plan is detailed yet scannable. By the end of it, one can walk away with a strong understanding of the organizationâs strategic direction for its upcoming marketing efforts.
- It confirms ongoing marketing strategies and objectives while introducing new initiatives.
- It uses colors, fonts, and formatting to emphasize key parts.
- It closes with long-term goals, key themes, and other overarching topics to set the stage for the future.
5. Wright County Economic Development
- âGoing viralâ isnât a goal; itâs an outcome.
- Be surprising. Subvert expectations.
- Be weird and niche if you want to be weird and niche, but establishing a shared cultural understanding might result in a bigger audience.
Pridemore Propertiesâ Instagram smash hit is unexpected, to say the least. You think youâre getting a home tour that takes your figurative breath away; you get a home tour that takes the agentâs literal breath away.
Verizonâs toe-tapping, hip-shaking Totalmente (aka Total by Verizon, a contractless phone plan) ad debuted during Univisionâs Spanish-language broadcast of Super Bowl LVIII. The ad reinvents the 1998 Elvis Crespo song âSuavemente,â an earworm if Iâve ever heard one, replacing the lyrics with Total by Verizon features.
Verizon Valueâs CMO and VP of Marketing, Cheryl Gresham, has admitted that she didnât know much about marketing to a majority-Latinx audience.
In an interview with Campaign Live , she said she didnât think the idea would have gotten off the ground âif it had just been me and a lot of other people that had a background like myself in that room.â
CampaignLive wrote, âGresham says the team opted for a creative concept that spoke to all the Latinos in the room â despite Gresham herself not understanding the connection.â
Greshamâs marketing strategy hinged on knowing her audience and, just as importantly, trusting her fellow marketers who knew how to reach that audience.
Strategic Takeaways for Demographic Marketing
- Know what you donât know.
- Foster diversity in marketing leadership and staff.
- Know your audience.
The catchy tune and the great storytelling certainly donât hurt.
But more than that, Ogilvy and Verizon dug deep into Latinx culture â more than 25 years deep â to craft an ad that doesnât feel like itâs just responding to the latest trend. They also tapped Venezuelan American comedian, musician, and producer Fred Armisen to direct the spot.

Aside from hiring experts who will write your assignment for you or having group studies and sharing the burden, here are 10 other ways you can master marketing tasks quickly and write marketing assignments perfectly:
#1 Know the Assignment First
One major mistake marketing students make is not spending time dissecting the task. Often, the tasks are not just assignments but case studies, PowerPoint presentation defense , projects, dissertations, and more. This means each task demands a different kind of writing and presentation.
Hence, know the assignment type and what the topic means. Break down the topic and think of ways to cover it. What other slants can you insert to elevate the resonating factor of the topic?
It is better to spend time on understanding the needs of the topic rather than rushing in by completely misunderstanding it.
#2 Pick an Example
First-year marketing students often fail to realize that their work will be more impactful if they add an example to strengthen the topic. Pick a brand or organization for your paper and use it as an example. This will allow you to find practical answers and develop logical results.
Also, papers with information on renowned brands and big names attract more audiences, making the paper more impactful. However, donât think of public attention only when picking big organizations; think of your capabilities to justify them to make the paper notable.
#3 Put a Self-Deadline
Of course, your professor will allot a deadline, but setting your own will only push you to finish on time. However, do not confuse this step with rash writing. Have an organized routine and set a deadline to complete it on time before the actual date.
Students who do this don’t have to worry about late submissions. This also gives the writer extra time to revise, which is often overlooked.
#4 Research Fiercely
This tip is quite common to any other assignment type out there. Yet this is the step that makes a major difference. Research as much as you can. There will be many competitors in your class.
Some may even pick the same topic as yours. The only way to stand out in such competition is through research. Students who are lazy with their research end up with shallow or superficial information. Such students rarely make it above the average mark.
Hence, to stand out, you must do in-depth research and find information from the deepest pits of the internet. Scout through many online and offline books, journals, and more to get the most real and deepest data on the topic. The professor will see through your efforts and hard work, and you can be awarded with grace marks for it.
#5 Real Events Make an Impression
Whether it’s marketing assignments or history assignments, real events never fail to make an impression. Your work will be read by others who always resonate with real-life examples.
This is again where your capacity to research shows. Those who research without excuses can find excruciating facts that make the topic shine.
Find accurate figures and data that validate your work. Some like introducing these statistics and events at the beginning and slowly unfolding them later in the paper to keep the audience hooked.
Try to find some related data to your work which will bring thousands of readers to explore the topic. Some students also take the extra step of conducting surveys, interviews, and even doing online polls to find information on the topic and add it to their assignments.
#6 Choose the Correct Writing Style
Various writing styles depend on the topic and purpose. Students can pick a business writing style or a personal writing style. Pick one that your audience finds dependable. Aim for a blend of sophisticated and simple terms rather than making it entirely simple or sophisticated.
Using complicated words for the context is okay. But avoid using overly challenging words, which an ordinary audience may find difficult to work with.
Do not forget to pick the one you are most comfortable with. Some writers can rock simple writing styles and still get good grades. Maintain writing flair and add authenticity to speak to your readers.
#7 Cite Correctly
With any assignment, finding online information is quite obvious. This is why you need to cite your sources. Citing means giving credit to the original writers whose information you have used in your paper. This gives credit to the original writer and helps the writer avoid plagiarism issues.
With marketing assignments, too, students need to cite the sources. There are plenty of citation styles, and one can pick the style which they prefer. Be cautious of different citing styles to avoid any mistakes and do it justice.
Learning how to cite can take some extra time, so you can hand over this part to someone who can do it for you, leaving no errors behind.
#8 Get a Second Consultation
Both beginners and professionals need a helping hand sometimes. Students who are uncertain about their work can contact professionals or their professors. They can review the work and make suggestions to improve the quality of the paper.
Experts can suggest better examples and better brands to use and even offer effective writing tips. If you are uncomfortable with an expert, consult your friends, siblings, and family members to be more comfortable with them. Together, you can make a remarkable paper that meets everyoneâs expectations.
#9 Use Online Tools
Although many find this tip controversial, we strongly agree with it. There are plenty of tools online, and the best thing is that they can be used.
Students can find tools to improve their writing and grammar, find plagiarism issues, and even check the quality of their papers.
The best thing about these tools is that they are free, and several are available online, making them a favorable option for students. These tools also highlight problem areas, making it easier for students to correct them.
Overall, find a trustworthy tool because numerous tools out there may not give you the desired result.
#10 Proofread Using Innovative Ways
Finally, the last step is to proofread your paper. Again, this is a very basic step that many people overlook. Proofread your paper before making the final submission. Do not jump into this process just after writing.
Wait a few days to make the process fruitful. You can also use innovative proofreading techniques to make the process fun.
Some ways of proofreading are:
â Reading it backward,
â Reading one section at a time,
â Having a list of mistakes,
â Reading it out aloud.
It keeps the proofreading process simple and interesting, eliminating the chances of any errors.
Marketing assignments involve various aspects. Combining them and doing justice is not an easy job. Hopefully, the tips above will show you how to write impeccable marketing assignments and get your deserved score.

Fawn Weaverâs Entrepreneurial Journey as an Outsider in the Spirits Industry
In 2017 Fawn Weaver launched a premium American whiskey brand, Uncle Nearest. It became the fastest growing and most awarded whiskey brand in America, despite the challenges Weaver faced as a Black woman and outsider to the spirits industry, which is capital-intensive, highly regulated, competitive, and male-dominated. In October 2023, Weaver announced plans to expand into cognac with the goal of building the next major alcoholic beverages conglomerate. But the company was still heavily reliant on capital. Angel City Football Club: A New Business Model for Womenâs Sports
Angel City Football Club (ACFC) was founded in 2020 by venture capitalist Kara Nortman, entrepreneur Julie Uhrman, and actor and activist Natalie Portman. As outsiders to professional sports, the all-female founding team had rewritten the playbook for how to build a sports franchise by applying lessons from the tech and entertainment industries. Unlike typical sports franchises that built their teams and track records over many years before extending their brand beyond a local base, ACFC had inverted the model, generating both global and local interest in the club during its first three years. The clubâs early success was reflected in its market valuation of $250 million as of its sale in July 2024 â the highest in the National Womenâs Soccer League. Equally important, ACFC had started to bend the curve toward greater pay equity in womenâs sports â the clubâs ultimate goal. But the founders knew there was much more to do to capitalize on the clubâs momentum. As they developed ACFCâs first three-year strategic plan in 2024, they weighed the most effective ways to build value for the franchise. Was it better to allocate the incremental budget to investments in digital brand building or to investments in the on-field product? Senior Lecturer Jeffrey Rayport is joined by case co-author Nicole Keller and club co-founder Kara Nortman to discuss the case, âAngel City Football Club: Scoring a New Model.â

Mastering the Art of Marketing Assignment Writing: Expert Tips for Student Success
by venus · Published October 22, 2023 · Updated April 27, 2024
Marketing assignments are a common task for students pursuing degrees in business, marketing, or related fields. These assignments not only test your knowledge but also your ability to apply marketing concepts and strategies to real-world scenarios. To help students excel in their marketing assignments, we’ve compiled a comprehensive list of tips to create the best marketing assignment possible.
Understand the Assignment Brief
Before you start crafting your marketing assignment, it’s essential to thoroughly understand the assignment brief. Carefully read the instructions, guidelines, and any specific requirements your instructor has provided. Pay attention to the formatting, word count, submission date, and the main objectives of the assignment. A clear understanding of the brief is crucial to ensure you meet all the criteria.
Research Extensively
Effective marketing assignment writing requires in-depth research. Don’t rely solely on your textbook or class notes. Explore various sources such as academic journals, books, reputable websites, and industry reports. The more diverse and credible your sources, the stronger your assignment will be. Stay updated with the latest marketing trends and case studies, as they can provide valuable insights and examples for your work.
Define Your Target Audience
Just as in marketing itself, understanding your target audience is crucial. In this case, your target audience is your instructor. Consider their expectations, preferences, and grading criteria. If your assignment is open-ended, inquire about any specific preferences your instructor may have regarding the topic or approach.
Choose an Engaging Topic
Selecting the right topic can make a significant difference in the quality of your marketing assignment. Look for topics that not only interest you but are also relevant and up-to-date. This could be related to emerging trends, case studies, or marketing strategies used by well-known brands. An engaging topic will not only make the assignment more enjoyable for you but also captivate your instructor’s attention.
Develop a Strong Thesis Statement
Like any academic paper, your marketing assignment should have a clear and concise thesis statement. This statement should provide a snapshot of what your assignment aims to achieve. It’s your roadmap, guiding both you and your readers throughout the paper.
Structure and Organize Effectively
Organizing your marketing assignment is key to delivering a coherent and well-structured paper. Typically, assignments should include an introduction, body, and conclusion. The body of your assignment should be divided into sections, each with a clear subheading. This makes it easier for readers to follow your arguments. Use a logical flow, presenting your ideas in a systematic order.
Original Content and Plagiarism Avoidance
One of the cardinal rules of academic writing is to avoid plagiarism at all costs. Ensure that your work is entirely original. Cite your sources correctly using the appropriate referencing style, such as APA, MLA, or Harvard. Plagiarism not only affects your grades but can have serious consequences for your academic integrity.
Analyze and Evaluate
Marketing assignments often require you to analyze and evaluate a marketing strategy or concept. When conducting your analysis, consider the strengths and weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Use relevant tools and models such as SWOT analysis, PESTEL analysis, or the marketing mix (4Ps or 7Ps) to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategy in question.
Provide Real-World Examples
Supporting your arguments with real-world examples is a surefire way to make your marketing assignment more compelling. Whether it’s a successful or unsuccessful marketing campaign, case studies, or industry trends, these examples help solidify your arguments and demonstrate your understanding of the subject matter.
Use Visuals Wisely
Incorporating visuals such as charts, graphs, and images can enhance the visual appeal of your marketing assignment. However, use them judiciously and make sure they are relevant to the content. Visuals should complement your text, not replace it. Additionally, provide clear explanations for any visuals you include.
Edit and Proofread
Never underestimate the importance of editing and proofreading. After completing your assignment, take the time to review it for grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and clarity. Ensure that your writing is concise and that your ideas are communicated effectively. If possible, ask a peer or professor to review your assignment for a fresh perspective.
Seek Feedback
Before submitting your marketing assignment, consider seeking feedback from classmates, friends, or professors. A fresh set of eyes can provide valuable insights and suggestions for improvement.
In conclusion, writing the best marketing assignment requires careful planning, research, and attention to detail. By following these tips, you can create a high-quality marketing assignment that not only meets your instructor’s expectations but also contributes to your understanding of marketing concepts and strategies. Good luck with your assignments!
