That’s all the time you have to grab your audience’s attention when you start your speech or presentation . And if you miss that window, you’ll spend the rest of your time hopelessly scrambling to win them back.
The reality is, when you’re writing your speech or presentation, you must focus everything on delivering an opening line that hooks your audience and gives them a reason to start, and keep listening to you.
Think about the last great speech or presentation you heard.
Chances are, it didn't start with "Good morning, ladies and gentlemen."
It hit you right between the eyes with something unexpected, intriguing, or provocative. That's the power of a strong opening. It sets the tone. It tells your audience, "Hey, this is worth your time. Pay attention."
But how do you write an opening line that grabs your audience's attention by the collar and doesn’t let go?
That’s what we’re digging into in this post.
I’m going to give you seven proven ways to kick off your next speech or presentation with a bang. I’ll tell you why each technique works when to use it, and, I’ll give you real examples you can adapt for your talks.
By the time you finish reading, you'll have a toolbox full of attention-grabbing openers that practically guarantee you'll have the skills and the right words to make those critical first 10 seconds count.

Want to jolt your audience awake?
Start your speech by hitting them with a number they can't ignore.
A well-chosen statistic stops people in their tracks. It grabs attention, sparks curiosity, and sets the stage for your entire talk.
But here's the key: it's got to be relevant and it's got to pack a punch.
Let's say you're talking about workplace productivity.
Don't start with "Good morning, everyone."
Instead, try this:
"Did you know that the average office worker is productive for
ONLY 2 hours and 23 minutes a day?"
Boom.
You've got their attention with something unexpected and specific. And, using the example above, might make some of your audience feel a little uncomfortable. They’ll immediately start wondering: Is that me? What am I doing with those other 5 hours and 37 minutes?
Now you've got them hooked.
They're ready to hear what you have to say about boosting productivity.
But remember, don't just drop the stat and move on.
Connect it to your message.
Follow up with something like:
"That's right. We're wasting over 70% of our workday. Imagine what we could achieve if we could reclaim even half of that time. Today, I'm going to show you how."
The trick is finding that perfect stat - something surprising, relevant, and tied directly to your main point. Do your research. Dig for that golden nugget. When you find it, lead with it.
Just make sure your source is solid. Nothing kills credibility faster than a bogus statistic.
Always be ready to back up your numbers if asked.

"Let me tell you a story"
There's a reason for that. Our brains are wired for narratives. We're suckers for a good tale, especially one that's personal and relatable.
Here's how you might kick off a talk on overcoming challenges:
"Three years ago, I was sitting in my car, parked outside the office, having a full-blown panic attack. I'd just been promoted to lead a team of 50 people, and I was convinced I was going to fail spectacularly."
Do you see how that works? It paints a vivid picture that many can relate to . Fear of failure, and imposter syndrome - these are universal experiences.
But don't leave your audience hanging.
Follow through:
"Today, I'm going to share how I turned that moment of panic into the catalyst for the most successful period of my career."
This hooks people into listening to the rest of your talk.
Stories work because they're emotional. They create a connection. And they make your message memorable.
Brené Brown, renowned researcher and storyteller, puts it this way:
Stories are data with a soul.
But remember, it's not about you being the hero. Your story should serve your audience . Use it to illustrate a point, teach a lesson, or introduce your topic. And keep it tight. A good opening story should be 60-90 seconds. Just enough to hook them and lead to your main message.

Want to get your audience thinking right off the bat?
Start your presentation by asking them a question.
But not just any question.
I'm talking about the kind that makes people sit up and ponder.
For example:
"What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail?"
That gets minds racing.
Questions work because they're interactive. Even if you don't expect a verbal response, you're inviting your audience to participate mentally.
Here's another example, great for a talk on innovation:
"How many of you used a product this morning that didn't exist 10 years ago?"
Now you've got them doing a mental inventory of their morning routine. Smartphones? Smart home devices? Plant-based milk alternatives?
"In the next 30 minutes, I'm going to show you how to spot the next game-changing innovation before it hits the market."
According to a study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, questions increase engagement and information retention . So, by starting with a question, you're not just grabbing attention - you're helping your audience remember your message.
But here's the trick: make sure your question is relevant to your topic and audience. A great question sparks curiosity and leads naturally to your main points .
And don't be afraid of silence. If you ask a thought-provoking question, give people a moment to think about it. Pauses can be powerful.

Sometimes, the best way to start your speech is by borrowing the words of someone else. A powerful quote can set the tone, add credibility, and spark interest.
Imagine you're giving a talk on leadership.
You could start like this:
"'The single biggest way to impact an organization is to focus on leadership development.' That's not me saying that. That's John Maxwell, one of the world's top leadership thinkers."
Now you've got attention and authority right out of the gate.
Or maybe you're talking about perseverance:
"Samuel Beckett once said, 'Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.' Today, we're going to explore how to turn failure into your greatest teacher."
Quotes work because they're concise nuggets of wisdom.
They can encapsulate complex ideas in memorable phrases.
But don't just drop the quote and move on. Explain why it matters. How does it relate to your message? Why should your audience care?
And here’s a pro tip: avoid overused quotes . " Be the change you wish to see in the world " is great, but we've all heard it a million times. Dig deeper. Find something fresh that still resonates.
Remember, the quote is just the appetizer. Your insights are the main course. Use the quote to lead into your unique perspective on the topic.

Close your eyes for a second. (Okay, finish reading this first, then close your eyes.)
Imagine you're starting a presentation on the future of work:
"It's 2035. You wake up and stretch. Your assistant calls you and briefs you on your schedule as you sip your morning coffee. You head to your home office, slip on your VR headset, and suddenly you're in a virtual boardroom with colleagues from five different continents. Welcome to the future of work."
See what happened there?
You didn't just tell them about the future. You transported them there.
Painting a vivid scenario works because it engages the imagination . It makes abstract concepts concrete and brings your ideas to life.
Chip and Dan Heath, in their book "Made to Stick," call this the "Velcro Theory of Memory." The more hooks you create, the more likely your idea is to stick.
You could use this technique for virtually any topic:
A health talk : "Imagine waking up every day feeling energized, focused, and pain-free..."
A financial seminar : "Picture yourself retiring five years early, with enough savings to travel the world..."
The key is to make it vivid, relevant, and tied to your message.
Don't just describe a scene - create an experience.
And remember, you're not writing the next great American novel here. Keep it brief, punchy, and purposeful. Your scenario should intrigue your audience and lead naturally to your main points.

Want to shake things up?
Start your speech with a statement that challenges everything your audience thinks they know.
Here's how you might kick off a talk on education reform:
"Grades are useless. Standardized tests are worse than useless. And homework? It's doing more harm than good."
You've just lobbed a grenade into the room.
People are going to sit up and take notice.
Or maybe you're talking about customer service:
"The customer is not always right. S ometimes the customer is spectacularly wrong."
Now you've got their attention. They're curious. Maybe even a little riled up. Perfect.
Bold statements work because they're provocative . They challenge the status quo and make people question their assumptions.
But here's the catch: you better be ready to back it up. Follow your statement with evidence, reasoning, and a clear path forward.
"I know that sounds crazy. But bear with me. Over the next 20 minutes, I'm going to show you the research that supports these claims, and more importantly, what we can do to create an education system that actually serves our children."
According to Dr. Robert Cialdini, author of "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion," contrast is a powerful tool of influence . By presenting an idea that contrasts sharply with what people expect, you increase engagement and memorability.
Just remember: bold doesn't mean reckless. Your statement should be thought-provoking, not offensive. And it should always, always tie directly to your main message.

Actions speak louder than words, right?
So why not start your speech with action?
Imagine you're giving a presentation on the importance of cyber security:
*[Walk on stage, pull out your phone, and start tapping]*
"In the past 30 seconds, I've just hacked into three of your Facebook accounts, two of your email addresses, and one of your bank accounts."
*[Pause for effect]*
"Don't worry, I haven't actually done that. But the scary truth is, I could have. And today, I'm going to show you how to make sure no one ever can."
You've undoubtedly got their attention with that opening, and you've made your point in a way they won't forget.
Demonstrations work because they're dynamic. They break the pattern of what people expect from a speech or presentation.
You could use this technique for all sorts of topics:
A health talk : Start by doing 20 push-ups on stage.
A presentation on recycling : Begin by sorting through a bag of trash.
The key is to make your demonstration relevant, impactful, and maybe a little unexpected.
Steve Jobs was a master at this. When he introduced the MacBook Air, he didn't just talk about how thin it was. He pulled it out of a manila envelope, showing its slim profile in a way that no words could match.
But remember, a demonstration is just the hook. Make sure it leads naturally into your main points. And practice, practice, practice. The last thing you want is for your demo to flop when it counts.

The self-introduction is your opportunity to make a good first impression. Be sure to open with a warm welcome and use language that is familiar and natural. Based on your audience, there are a few different expressions you can use to start your presentation.

The purpose of shocking your audience is to immediately engage them. You can make a loud noise and somehow relate the noise to your presentation. Or, you can say, “ Did you know that… ” and follow with a shocking story or statistic. Either way, the objective is to create surprise to draw their attention.
Telling a story related to your presentation is a great way to get the audience listening to you.
You can start by saying, “ On my way to [location] the other day… ” or “ On my way here, I was reminded of… ” and then follow with a story. A good story can make your presentation memorable.
Sometimes a good introduction that captures attention will involve asking for help from the audience. You can ask the audience to play a quick game or solve a puzzle that’s related to your presentation. Also, you could engage the audience with a group exercise. This is a great way to get people involved in your presentation.

For many people the thought of delivering a presentation is a daunting task and brings about a great deal of nerves . However, if you take some time to understand how effective presentations are structured and then apply this structure to your own presentation, you’ll appear much more confident and relaxed.
Here is our complete guide for structuring your presentation, with examples at the end of the article to demonstrate these points.
If you’ve ever sat through a great presentation, you’ll have left feeling either inspired or informed on a given topic. This isn’t because the speaker was the most knowledgeable or motivating person in the world. Instead, it’s because they know how to structure presentations – they have crafted their message in a logical and simple way that has allowed the audience can keep up with them and take away key messages.
Research has supported this, with studies showing that audiences retain structured information 40% more accurately than unstructured information.
In fact, not only is structuring a presentation important for the benefit of the audience’s understanding, it’s also important for you as the speaker. A good structure helps you remain calm, stay on topic, and avoid any awkward silences.
Generally speaking, there is a natural flow that any decent presentation will follow which we will go into shortly. However, you should be aware that all presentation structures will be different in their own unique way and this will be due to a number of factors, including:

This is the usual flow of a presentation, which covers all the vital sections and is a good starting point for yours. It allows your audience to easily follow along and sets out a solid structure you can add your content to.
Before you start delivering your talk, introduce yourself to the audience and clarify who you are and your relevant expertise. This does not need to be long or incredibly detailed, but will help build an immediate relationship between you and the audience. In the introduction you need to explain the subject and purpose of your presentation whilst gaining the audience’s interest and confidence. It’s sometimes helpful to think of your introduction as funnel-shaped to help filter down your topic:

The way you structure your introduction can depend on the amount of time you have been given to present: a sales pitch may consist of a quick presentation so you may begin with your conclusion and then provide the evidence. Conversely, a speaker presenting their idea for change in the world would be better suited to start with the evidence and then conclude what this means for the audience.
Keep in mind that the main aim of the introduction is to grab the audience’s attention and connect with them.
The main body of your talk needs to meet the promises you made in the introduction. Depending on the nature of your presentation, clearly segment the different topics you will be discussing, and then work your way through them one at a time – it’s important for everything to be organised logically for the audience to fully understand. There are many different ways to organise your main points, such as, by priority, theme, chronologically etc.
When planning your presentation write a list of main points you want to make and ask yourself “What I am telling the audience? What should they understand from this?” refining your answers this way will help you produce clear messages.
In presentations the conclusion is frequently underdeveloped and lacks purpose which is a shame as it’s the best place to reinforce your messages. Typically, your presentation has a specific goal – that could be to convert a number of the audience members into customers, lead to a certain number of enquiries to make people knowledgeable on specific key points, or to motivate them towards a shared goal.
Regardless of what that goal is, be sure to summarise your main points and their implications. This clarifies the overall purpose of your talk and reinforces your reason for being there.

Conclude your talk by thanking the audience for their time and invite them to ask any questions they may have. As mentioned earlier, personal circumstances will affect the structure of your presentation.
Many presenters prefer to make the Q&A session the key part of their talk and try to speed through the main body of the presentation. This is totally fine, but it is still best to focus on delivering some sort of initial presentation to set the tone and topics for discussion in the Q&A.

Use the demonstration structure when you have something useful to show. This is usually used when you want to show how a product works. Steve Jobs frequently used this technique in his presentations.
This structure is particularly useful in persuading the audience.
As well as incorporating stories in your presentation , you can organise your whole presentation as a story. There are lots of different type of story structures you can use – a popular choice is the monomyth – the hero’s journey. In a monomyth, a hero goes on a difficult journey or takes on a challenge – they move from the familiar into the unknown. After facing obstacles and ultimately succeeding the hero returns home, transformed and with newfound wisdom.

Another popular choice for using a story to structure your presentation is in media ras (in the middle of thing). In this type of story you launch right into the action by providing a snippet/teaser of what’s happening and then you start explaining the events that led to that event. This is engaging because you’re starting your story at the most exciting part which will make the audience curious – they’ll want to know how you got there.
The remaining method structure is good for situations where you’re presenting your perspective on a controversial topic which has split people’s opinions.
When delivering presentations it’s important for your words and ideas to flow so your audience can understand how everything links together and why it’s all relevant. This can be done using speech transitions which are words and phrases that allow you to smoothly move from one point to another so that your speech flows and your presentation is unified.
Transitions can be one word, a phrase or a full sentence – there are many different forms, here are some examples:

This presentation by ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt demonstrates some of the most important lessons he and his team have learnt with regards to working with some of the most talented individuals they hired. The simplistic yet cohesive style of all of the slides is something to be appreciated. They are relatively straightforward, yet add power and clarity to the narrative of the presentation.
Since being released in 2009, this presentation has been viewed almost four million times all around the world. The message itself is very powerful, however, it’s not an idea that hasn’t been heard before. What makes this presentation so powerful is the simple message he is getting across, and the straightforward and understandable manner in which he delivers it. Also note that he doesn’t use any slides, just a whiteboard where he creates a simple diagram of his opinion.
Here’s an example of a presentation given by a relatively unknown individual looking to inspire the next generation of graduates. Rick’s presentation is unique in many ways compared to the two above. Notably, he uses no visual prompts and includes a great deal of humour.
However, what is similar is the structure he uses. He first introduces his message that the wisest man he knew was a third-grade dropout. He then proceeds to deliver his main body of argument, and in the end, concludes with his message. This powerful speech keeps the viewer engaged throughout, through a mixture of heart-warming sentiment, powerful life advice and engaging humour.
As you can see from the examples above, and as it has been expressed throughout, a great presentation structure means analysing the core message of your presentation. Decide on a key message you want to impart the audience with, and then craft an engaging way of delivering it.
By preparing a solid structure, and practising your talk beforehand, you can walk into the presentation with confidence and deliver a meaningful message to an interested audience.

According to Anderson, presentations rise or fall on the quality of the idea, the narrative, and the passion of the speaker. It’s about substance—not style. In fact, it’s fairly easy to “coach out” the problems in a talk, but there’s no way to “coach in” the basic story—the presenter has to have the raw material. So if your thinking is not there yet, he advises, decline that invitation to speak. Instead, keep working until you have an idea that’s worth sharing.
Lessons from TED
A little more than a year ago, on a trip to Nairobi, Kenya, some colleagues and I met a 12-year-old Masai boy named Richard Turere, who told us a fascinating story. His family raises livestock on the edge of a vast national park, and one of the biggest challenges is protecting the animals from lions—especially at night. Richard had noticed that placing lamps in a field didn’t deter lion attacks, but when he walked the field with a torch, the lions stayed away. From a young age, he’d been interested in electronics, teaching himself by, for example, taking apart his parents’ radio. He used that experience to devise a system of lights that would turn on and off in sequence—using solar panels, a car battery, and a motorcycle indicator box—and thereby create a sense of movement that he hoped would scare off the lions. He installed the lights, and the lions stopped attacking. Soon villages elsewhere in Kenya began installing Richard’s “lion lights.”

The objective of an oral presentation is to portray large amounts of often complex information in a clear, bite sized fashion. Although some of the success lies in the content, the rest lies in the speaker’s skills in transmitting the information to the audience. 1
It is important to be as well prepared as possible. Look at the venue in person, and find out the time allowed for your presentation and for questions, and the size of the audience and their backgrounds, which will allow the presentation to be pitched at the appropriate level.
See what the ambience and temperature are like and check that the format of your presentation is compatible with the available computer. This is particularly important when embedding videos. Before you begin, look at the video on stand-by and make sure the lights are dimmed and the speakers are functioning.
For visual aids, Microsoft PowerPoint or Apple Mac Keynote programmes are usual, although Prezi is increasing in popularity. Save the presentation on a USB stick, with email or cloud storage backup to avoid last minute disasters.
When preparing the presentation, start with an opening slide containing the title of the study, your name, and the date. Begin by addressing and thanking the audience and the organisation that has invited you to speak. Typically, the format includes background, study aims, methodology, results, strengths and weaknesses of the study, and conclusions.
If the study takes a lecturing format, consider including “any questions?” on a slide before you conclude, which will allow the audience to remember the take home messages. Ideally, the audience should remember three of the main points from the presentation. 2
Have a maximum of four short points per slide. If you can display something as a diagram, video, or a graph, use this instead of text and talk around it.
Animation is available in both Microsoft PowerPoint and the Apple Mac Keynote programme, and its use in presentations has been demonstrated to assist in the retention and recall of facts. 3 Do not overuse it, though, as it could make you appear unprofessional. If you show a video or diagram don’t just sit back—use a laser pointer to explain what is happening.
Rehearse your presentation in front of at least one person. Request feedback and amend accordingly. If possible, practise in the venue itself so things will not be unfamiliar on the day. If you appear comfortable, the audience will feel comfortable. Ask colleagues and seniors what questions they would ask and prepare responses to these questions.
It is important to dress appropriately, stand up straight, and project your voice towards the back of the room. Practise using a microphone, or any other presentation aids, in advance. If you don’t have your own presenting style, think of the style of inspirational scientific speakers you have seen and imitate it.
Try to present slides at the rate of around one slide a minute. If you talk too much, you will lose your audience’s attention. The slides or videos should be an adjunct to your presentation, so do not hide behind them, and be proud of the work you are presenting. You should avoid reading the wording on the slides, but instead talk around the content on them.
Maintain eye contact with the audience and remember to smile and pause after each comment, giving your nerves time to settle. Speak slowly and concisely, highlighting key points.
Do not assume that the audience is completely familiar with the topic you are passionate about, but don’t patronise them either. Use every presentation as an opportunity to teach, even your seniors. The information you are presenting may be new to them, but it is always important to know your audience’s background. You can then ensure you do not patronise world experts.
To maintain the audience’s attention, vary the tone and inflection of your voice. If appropriate, use humour, though you should run any comments or jokes past others beforehand and make sure they are culturally appropriate. Check every now and again that the audience is following and offer them the opportunity to ask questions.
Finishing up is the most important part, as this is when you send your take home message with the audience. Slow down, even though time is important at this stage. Conclude with the three key points from the study and leave the slide up for a further few seconds. Do not ramble on. Give the audience a chance to digest the presentation. Conclude by acknowledging those who assisted you in the study, and thank the audience and organisation. If you are presenting in North America, it is usual practice to conclude with an image of the team. If you wish to show references, insert a text box on the appropriate slide with the primary author, year, and paper, although this is not always required.
Answering questions can often feel like the most daunting part, but don’t look upon this as negative. Assume that the audience has listened and is interested in your research. Listen carefully, and if you are unsure about what someone is saying, ask for the question to be rephrased. Thank the audience member for asking the question and keep responses brief and concise. If you are unsure of the answer you can say that the questioner has raised an interesting point that you will have to investigate further. Have someone in the audience who will write down the questions for you, and remember that this is effectively free peer review.
Be proud of your achievements and try to do justice to the work that you and the rest of your group have done. You deserve to be up on that stage, so show off what you have achieved.

I used to work for a company that offered feedback for corporate leaders on presenting and I agree with everything you say. Bringing your personality into a presentation or speech can make a huge difference but it can take practice to get comfortable enough to bring that energy.
