టాలీవుడ్ హీరోలంతా ఇప్పుడు పాన్ ఇండియా పేరు తెగ కలవరిస్తున్నారు. హీరో నిఖిల్ కూడా ఇందులో ఉన్నాడు. తెలుగులో చిన్నహీరోగా పలు హిట్స్ కొట‍్టిన నిఖిల్.. 'కార్తికేయ 2'తో దేశవ్యాప్తంగా గుర్తింపు సొంతం చేసుకున్నాడు. ఏ మాత్రం అంచనాల్లేకుండా వచ్చిన ఆ చిత్రం సూపర్ హిట్ అయింది. అది దైవభక్తి నేపథ‍్యం. ఇప్పుడు దేశభక్తి కాన్సెప్ట్ తో తీసిన 'స్పై' సినిమాలో నటించాడు. విడుదలకు ముందే మోస్తరు అంచనాలు ఏర్పడ్డాయి. తాజాగా ఈ చిత్రం థియేటర్లలోకి వచ్చింది. మరి ఎలా ఉంది? ఏంటనేది రివ్యూలో చూద్దాం!

కథేంటి? జై(నిఖిల్).. 'రా' ఇంటెలిజెన్స్ లో ఏజెంట్‌గా పనిచేస్తుంటాడు. శ్రీలంకలో ఓ మిషన్‌ని పూర్తిచేసి స్వదేశానికి తిరిగొస్తాడు. ఈ క్రమంలో 'రా' చీఫ్ శాస్త్రి (మకరంద్ దేశ్‌పాండే).. ఓ మిషన్ లో భాగంగా చనిపోయిన ఏజెంట్ సుభాష్ వర్ధన్ (ఆర్యన్ రాజేశ్) ఫైల్ అప్పగిస్తాడు. అతడి చావుకి కారణం తెలుసుకోమని ఆర్డర్ వేస్తాడు. ఈ మిషన్‌లో భాగంగా జై పలు సవాళ్లని ఎదుర్కొంటాడు. చివరకు ఏం తెలుసుకున్నాడు? ఈ కథలో ఖాదిర్ ఖాన్, అబ్దుల్ రెహ్మాన్(జిషుసేన్ గుప్తా) ఎవరు? చివరకు మిషన్ సక్సెస్ అయిందా లేదా అనేదే 'స్పై' స్టోరీ.

ఎలా ఉందంటే? సాధారణంగా స్పై సినిమాలు అనగానే కథ ఎలా ఉంటుందనేది మనకు తెలుసు. ఎందుకంటే అప్పుడెప్పుడో వచ్చిన సూపర్‌స్టార్ కృష్ణ 'గూఢచారి 116' నుంచి అడివి శేష్ 'గూఢచారి' వరకు ఈ తరహా మూవీస్ చూస్తూనే ఉన్నాం. ఓ ఏజెంట్ ఉంటాడు... రా డిపార్ట్‌మెంట్.. దానికి ఓ చీఫ్.. ఆయన సదరు హీరో అనబడే ఏజెంట్‪‌కి ఓ మిషన్ అప్పగిస్తాడు. ఫైనల్ గా అది పూర్తి చేసి, విలన్ ని చంపాడా లేదా అనేదే స్టోరీ. సరిగా ఈ టెంప్లేట్‌ని ఉన్నది ఉన్నట్లు నిఖిల్ 'స్పై' సినిమా ఫాలో అయిపోయింది. పైపెచ్చు కొత్తదనం అస్సలు లేదు.

ఫస్టాప్ విషయానికొస్తే.. జోర్డాన్ లో ఆయుధాలని స్మగ్లింగ్ చేసే విలన్ ఖాదిర్ ఖాన్ ని మన రా ఏజెంట్ సుభాష్ కాల్చి చంపేస్తాడు. ఆ వెంటనే సుభాష్ ని ఎవరో చంపేస్తారు. కట్ చేస్తే శ్రీలంకలో జై పాత్రలో నిఖిల్ ఎంట్రీ, ఓ మిషన్ పూర్తి చేసి.. స్వదేశానికి వచ్చేయడం. ఇక్కడొచ్చిన తర్వాత సుభాష్ ని ఎవరు చంపేశారో తెలుసుకోమని నిఖిల్ కు మిషన్ అప్పజెప్తారు. అలా నేపాల్ వెళ్తాడు. అక్కడ ఏజెంట్ వైష్ణవి(ఐశ్వర్య మేనన్) వీళ్ల టీమ్ తో కలుస్తుంది. ఈమెకి జై పాత్రతో గతంలో ఓ లవ్ స్టోరీ ఉంటుంది. అది చాలా రొటీన్ గా అనిపిస్తుంది. 

ఓ మంచి సీన్ తో ఇంటర్వెల్ బ్యాంగ్ పడుతుంది. సెకండాఫ్ లో ఖాదిర్ ఖాన్ కోసం వెళ్తే.. ఏజెంట్ జై టీమ్ కి బోలెడన్ని కొత్త విషయాలు తెలుస్తాయి. అలానే మన దగ్గర నుంచి సుభాష్ చంద్రబోస్ డెత్ మిస్టరీ ఫైల్ మిస్ అయినట్లు తెలుస్తోంది. ఇంతకీ అది ఎవరి చేతికి చిక్కింది? ఫైనల్ గా జై ఏం తెలుసుకున్నాడు? ఎవరిని చంపాడు లాంటివి తెలుసుకోవాలంటే మీరు థియేటర్ కి వెళ్లి సినిమా చూడాల్సిందే. 

టీజర్, ట్రైలర్ చూసి ఇదో మంచి ఇంటెన్స్ థ్రిల్లర్ అనుకుంటే మీరు పప్పులో కాలేసినట్లే. ఎందుకంటే ఇందులో దేశభక్తి అనే కోటింగ్ తప్ప రొటీన్ రెగ్యులర్ స్పై తరహా సినిమానే. ఏ మాత్రం కొత్తదనం లేదు. అలానే చాలాచోట్ల సినిమాటిక్‌ లిబర్టీ విపరీతంగా తీసుకున్నారు. ఓ సీన్ లో ఓ అమ్మాయి చిన్నప‍్పటి ఫొటో దొరుకుతుంది. దాన్ని ఫోన్ లో ఫొటో తీసి 25 ఏళ్ల తర్వాత ఎలా ఉంటుందో జై టీమ్ కనిపెట‍్టేస్తారు. అది కూడా కేవలం నిమిషాల్లో. ఈ సీన్ చూడగానే.. ఆడియెన్స్ మరీ అంతా పిచ్చోళ్లగా కనిపిస్తున్నారా అనే డౌట్ వస్తుంది. అలానే జై ఏజెంట్ కావడానికి, సుభాష్ చంద్రబోస్ ఫైల్ లో ఏముందనేది చూపించలేదు. పోనీ యాక్షన్ సీన్స్ అయినా కొత్తగా ఉన్నాయా అంటే అదీలేదు. బోరింగ్ కే బోరింగ్ అన‍్నట్లు తయారయ్యాయి.

ఎవరెలా చేశారు? ఏజెంట్‌గా నిఖిల్ ఫెర్ఫెక్ట్‌గా సెట్ అయ్యాడు. తను ఇప్పటివరకు చేయని జానర్ కావడం వల్లనో ఏమోగానీ మంచి ఈజ్ తో చేసుకుంటూ వెళ్లిపోయాడు. అభినవ్ గోమఠం.. ఏజెంట్ కమల్ పాత్రలో యాక్షన్ కంటే కామెడీనే ఎక్కువ చేశాడు. కొన్నిసార్లు ఆ కామెడీ ఓకే అనిపించినప్పటికీ.. మరికొన్నిసార్లు స్టోరీని సైడ్ ట్రాక్ పట్టించినట్లు అనిపించింది. హీరోయిన్ గా చేసిన ఐశ్వర్య మేనన్.. ఏజెంట్ వైష్ణవి పాత్రలో ఓకే. ఏదో ఉందంటే ఉందంతే. నిఖిల్ పక్కన ఉండటం తప్పితే పెద్దగా చేసిందేం లేదు. మిగతా వాళ్లు పర్వాలేదనిపించారు. రానా.. కాసేపు అలా కనిపించి అలరించాడు. పోసాని కృష్ణమురళి, ఆర్యన్ రాజేశ్, సచిన్ ఖేడ్కర్, సురేశ్ లాంటి మంచి నటులు ఉన్నప్పటికీ.. వాళ్లందరికీ ఒకటి రెండు సీన్లకే పరిమితం చేశారు. 

ఈ సినిమా టెక్నికల్ పరంగా అయినా బాగుందా అంటే పెద్దగా చెప్పుకోదగ్గ స్థాయిలో ఏం లేదు. శ్రీచరణ్ పాకాల బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోరు బాగున్నప్పటికీ.. విశాల్ చంద్రశేఖర్ పాటలు థియేటర్ నుంచి బయటకొచ్చాక గుర్తుండవ్. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ పర్లేదు. గ్రాఫిక్స్ అయితే కొన్నిచోట్ల తేలిపోయాయి. యాక్షన్ కొరియోగ్రఫీ బాగుంది కానీ ఇంకా బెటర్ గా చేసి ఉండాల్సింది. నిర్మాణ విలువలు పర్లేదు. డైరెక్టర్ గ్యారీ బీహెచ్.. స్వతహాగా ఎడిటర్. కానీ ఈ సినిమాలోని ఫస్టాప్ లో కొన్ని సీన్లు అలానే ఉంచేశారు. వాటి వల్ల ల్యాగ్ అనిపించింది. వాటిని ట్రిమ్ చేసుంటే బాగుండేది. ఓవరాల్‌గా చెప్పుకుంటే 'స్పై'.. రెగ్యులర్ రొటీన్ బోరింగ్ డ్రామా. పెద్దగా థ్రిల్ పంచదు, అలా అని ఇంటెన్స్ స్టోరీ కూడా ఉండదు. స్పై సినిమాలను ఇష్టపడేవాళ్లకు అంతో ఇంతో ఈ చిత్రం నచ్చుతుంది.

Jay( Nikhil) is a raw agent who is on a mission to checkmate Glodal terrorist Khadir Khan. Jay’s another task is to find who killed his brother, Subhash ( Aryan Rajesh) who died in a five year old mission. Another dimension to the script is a missing file related to Netaji Subhash Chandrabose. Rest of the film is about how Jay is able to resolve all three points.

Spy script is an overambitious one.The team has included all the keywords that are of global scale but the direction is of Ameerpet league. When we need to make a film on international secret services agent, apparently it needs to be on a mega budget and solid casting.Alternative approach is a small scale one with smart writing and engaging direction. Unfortunately, Spy film misses all above checkmarks. Only one thread in this film succeeded partially is when it talks around Netaji Subhash Chandrabose. The controversy surrounding his disappearance, His principles etc episodes play to the galleries well. That is the only saving grace of the film.

Production values are adequate if we measure from a typical Telugu film point of view . But the budget is sub par for the given theme.

The script is so silly that at somepoint, the film shows the proceedings cause China Vs India war. The terrorist Khadir Khan episodes are so monotonous. The second half introduces another villain ( Jisshu sengupta ) but still remains ineffective.Garry Bh direction is not adequate. Cinematography by Mark David is good. Background score by sricharan is okay.

Performances : Nikhil is fine as RAW agent ‘ Jay ‘. But not as effective as his previous outings. Abhinav Gomatam one liners are fine from comedy angle, but watching him as On field raw agent is a joke on audience. Atleast, his character should have been limited to a backoffice agent. Makarand Deshpande as Raw Chief overacts in many scenes. Jissu Sengupta is just Ok. Iswarya Menon acted as an NIA agent. Nitin Mehta as Khadir Khan is good pick but he could have got more screen presence.

SPY film has big ideas with mediocre execution. The scenes written around Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose are a bit consolation in this template film. The scripts written around International SPY theme demand huge budget , which apparently one cannot match. Overall, SPY film could have been better.

Young hero Nikhil pinned a lot of his hopes on Spy, which is based on the very interesting real-life story of the disappearance of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The film is promoted as a slick spy thriller. Let’s see what it has in store for the viewers.

Story: Jai (Nikhil) is a RAW agent working in Sri Lanka. He is notified of terrorist activity after a terrorist named Kaadir Khan, who is believed to be killed, resurfaces and sends a video to the prime minister’s office. Jai is now designated with the mission of nabbing Kaadir. In the process, he discovers the personal loss he had to suffer due to this particular terrorist. How is this mission related to the disappearance of Netaji Subhash Chandrabose?

How did the actors perform?

Nikhil is fine in his role of a spy. There’s nothing too challenging about it, but Nikhil does blend in and delivers a fine act. Iswarya Menon gets a brief role and she is alright. Abhinav Gomatam had a full length character and his performance is adequate. Aryan Rajesh, Marakand Deshpande, and others do justice to their roles.

What about off screen talents?

Talented editor, Garry BH turns a director with this film. Being an editor, one would expect him to deliver a sharply-cut spy thriller. However, the X factor and sharpness is limited in this film as it mostly progresses on a predicable note.

The opening half is watchable with decent moments here and there. There’s just about enough impetus here. But the latter half is a mess. The blending of Netaji’s track isn’t smooth and it doesn’t quite sit in. This was the most important part of the film and it stutters.

For films like Spy to work, the screenplay should be crisp and pacy. In this case, despite the short runtime, we get a feeling it goes on and on and on.

The BGM and songs are weak and they don’t add value to the film. The cinematography is impressive as the visual presentation looks rich and vibrant. The production values are of good quality.

• No thrills in the end

Verdict: Spy is a below par thriller that has a few bright moments here and there but as a package, it fails to deliver a satisfying thriller movie experience. Nikhil’s honest efforts are seen, but the cinematic brilliance that is needed for spy thriller goes missing. It makes for a below average watch, at best.

Final Report: Spy comes to an end with most predictable second half. Overall the move falls short and limits to occasional good moments. Nethaji story not blended well which the narrator banked on to be the underlying emotion of the movie. Nikhil acted well in the movie but lack of emotion in the movie ruins it all.

పోలీస్ ఆఫీసర్ అయిన భవభూతి (శ్రీ విష్ణు) తన భార్య (మీరా జాస్మిన్) కు పిల్లలు పుట్టకుండా అడ్డుకొంటుంటాడు. దాంతో అతడిని విడిచి వెళ్లిపోతుంది. తాను అమితంగా ప్రేమించే భార్య వెళ్లిపోవడంతో ఓ రకమైన డిప్రెషన్‌లో వెళ్లిపోతాడు. అలాంటి సమయంలో శ్వాగనిక వంశానికి వారసుడు కావడం వల్ల వారికి సంబంధించిన సంపదను సొంతం చేసుకోవాలనే లెటర్ వస్తుంది. అది చాలా ఉత్తేజంగా అనిపించడంతో తన వారసత్వాన్ని క్లెయిమ్ చేసుకోవడానికి వెళితే.. అక్కడ తాము కూడా వారసులమంటూ కొందరు వస్తారు.

16వ శతాబ్దంలో మాతృస్వామ్యాన్ని నిలబెట్టాలనే వింజామర వంశానికి చెందిన రాణి తన పురుషులను నీచంగా చూడటం, పుట్టిన మగ పిల్లల్ని చంపడమే ఒక ఎమోషనల్ పాయింట్‌తో కథను అద్బుతంగా హసిత్ గోలి ఆలోచించాడు. అయితే అలాంటి పాయింట్‌ను చెప్పడంలో సక్సెస్ అయ్యాడు. కానీ పూర్తిస్థాయిలో ఆ సినిమా కథను తెర మీద క్లారిటీగా చెప్పడంలో మిస్ అయ్యాడని చెప్పవచ్చు. ఫస్టాఫ్‌లో సింగ పాత్ర యూట్యూబర్ పాత్రతో ఫన్ క్రియేట్ చేసి.. ఇంటర్వెల్ వరకు మంచి ఎమోషనల్ పాయింట్‌తో అసలు కథలోకి వెళ్లాడం కొంత పాజిటివ్ అనిపిస్తుంది.

ఇక సెకండాఫ్ విషయానికి వస్తే.. వారసత్వ సంపదకు సంబంధించిన కాన్‌ఫ్లిక్ట్‌కు వచ్చే సరికి దర్శకుడు తడబాటుకు గురయ్యాడు. సింగ, భవభూతి, అనుభూతి, యయాతి పాత్రలన్నీ జొప్పించడంతో కథలో ఏం జరుగుందో అర్ధం కాని పరిస్థితితో కన్‌ఫ్యూజన్ ఎక్కువగా క్రియేట్ అయిందనిపిస్తుంది. కాకపోతే ప్రీ క్లైమాక్స్ నుంచి చివరి సినిమా వరకు నడిపించిన డ్రామా హృదయాన్ని కట్టిపడేస్తుంది. ఆడ, మగ, ట్రాన్స్‌జెండర్ అనే తేడా లేకుండా మనం మనుషులం అని చెప్పిన పాయింట్ ఈ సినిమాకు మంచి జస్టిఫికేషన్, ఓ సందేశంగా ఉంటుంది.

రాజా భవభూతి, రికార్డింగ్ డ్యాన్సర్ యయాతి, ఇన్స్‌పెక్టర్ భవభూతి, యూట్యూబర్ సింగ పాత్రలతోపాటు భావోద్వేగానికి గురిచేసే మరో పాత్రలో శ్రీ విష్ణు చెలరేగిపోయాడు. ఐదు పాత్రలను డిఫరెంట్‌గా నటించడంతోపాటు పాత్రలకు తగినట్టు యాటిట్యూడ్, బాడీ లాంగ్వేజ్, డైలాగ్ డెలవరీతో కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కంటెంట్ అనిపించుకొన్నాడు. ఈ సినిమాకు శ్రీ విష్ణు వన్ మ్యాన్ షో అని చెప్పవచ్చు.

ఇక శ్వాగ్ సినిమాతో మీరా జాస్మిన్ అద్బుతంగా నటించడమే కాకుండా ఆ క్యారెక్టర్ ద్వారా ఎమోషన్‌కు గురి చేస్తుంది. మీరా జాస్మిన్ పాత్ర ఈ సినిమాకు మరో ఎత్తు.. అలాగే రీతూ వర్మ కూడా రెండు రకాల షేడ్స్ ఉన్న పాత్రలో తన సత్తా ఏమిటో చూపించింది. ఇక దక్ష నగార్కర్ గ్లామర్‌పరంగా రాణిస్తే..శరణ్య ప్రదీప్ సూపర్బ్ పాత్రతో అందర్నీ కట్టిపడేస్తుంది. సునీల్, రవిబాబు, గోపరాజు పాత్రలు కూడా సినిమాకు అత్యంత బలంగా మారాయి. రవిబాబు తన కామెడీ టైమింగ్‌తో మరోసారి ప్రేక్షకుల మెప్పు పొందారనే చెప్పాలి. మిగితా పాత్రల్లో నటించిన ప్రతీ ఒక్కరు కూడా అద్బుతంగా తెరపైన కనిపించారు.

ఇక టెక్నికల్ విషయానికి వస్తే.. ఈ సినిమాకు సినిమాటోగ్రఫి, ఆర్ట్ విభాగం ప్లస్ పాయింట్స్. ఈ సినిమాకు వివేక్ సాగర్ అందించిన పాటలు, బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోరు సన్నివేశాలకు గ్రాండియర్‌గా ఎలివేషన్ ఇచ్చింది. ఎడిటింగ్ పరంగా కొన్ని సమస్యలు ఉన్నాయి.. వాటిని ముందే క్లియర్ చేసుకొంటే ఇంత కన్‌ఫ్యూజన్ ఉండేది కాదేమో అనిపించింది. ఎప్పటీలానే పీపుల్స్ మీడియా ఫ్యాక్టరీ మంచి నిర్మాణ విలువలను పాటించింది. టీజీ విశ్వప్రసాద్ అభిరుచికి అద్దం పట్టేలా ఈ సినిమా ఉంది.

Top Tollywood star NTR’s pan-India action drama, Devara, is going great guns at the box office even in its second week. The film is particularly doing solid business in the Nizam region, where it is inching towards the Rs 50 crore club.

On its second Sunday, Devara posted a massive Rs 1.94 crore share at the ticket counters across the Nizam region. The film’s total 10-day distributor share amounts to Rs 46.81 crore (excl GST). On the other hand, the film collected Rs 5.71 crore share on Sunday in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, taking its 10-day total share to Rs 121.66 crore.

Also featuring Bollywood stars Saif Ali Khan and Janhvi Kapoor in lead roles, Devara is directed by Koratala Siva and produced by Nandamuri Kalyan Ram, Mikkilineni Sudhakar, and Kosaraju Hari Krishna. Anirudh Ravichander has composed the soundtrack.
