Writing speeches: keynotes, presentations and special occasion addresses

Course summary.

With a little coaching and preparation, most people can deliver a speech, but few can actually write a good one. That's why we hear so many inept ones. A well-written and well-delivered speech can be a forceful medium for promoting an organisation and highlighting its leaders as well as a powerful way to communicate messages. But a poorly planned and written speech can have the opposite effect, even delivered by the best speakers. In this interactive one-day workshop, learn simple skills to help you to write for the ear, not the eye. When you write a good speech - whether for yourself or another person - it connects with the audience and moves them along a path you have persuaded them to follow. It engages emotions, shapes opinions and gets results. You will acquire user-friendly techniques for researching and composing speeches to engage, inform, entertain and motivate listeners.

“The course exceeded my expectations. I was especially pleased that the course focused not just on the written word, but on delivery too. ” — LW, MS Society
“Excellent. The notes I made will help when working on future projects.” — LC, Stevenage Borough Council
“The course was excellent and I would recommend it to colleagues. The trainer was knowledgeable, engaging, and has given me increased appetite and confidence for future speeches. ” — PS, WRAP

The course also translates well for overseas delegates and has also attracted interest from senior executives and public affairs professionals, working for prestigious International Organisations such as the European Investment Bank, the International Council for Nursing, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and Deutsche Bank. Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in your 1:1 course v.

Your course can be a 5, 10 or 15 session package. Each course is designed bespoke for you. You’ll receive a manual to be used alongside your sessions and you will have the full support of your coach and the LSW Head Office team during your course, as well as an online portal where you can manage your sessions.

Is the course personalised to me? v

Yes! We are not a cookie cutter one-size fits all approach. Our courses are made to fit you and never the other way round! The first step is a Discovery Call with one of our Client Success Managers so we can understand your communication goals. Then we recommend a coach that best fits your needs. In the taster or first session your coach will design a course programme tailored to your needs and goals.

Can I mix courses? v

Yes, if that is what suits your personal needs and will help you achieve your goals in the best way possible, then our coaches can certainly mix in elements of different courses for you.

What is an Effective Communication Taster? v

In this one-hour session, your coach will introduce two powerful tools: our Engagement Technique and Delivery Mastery tools. You’ll see their impact first-hand with a before-and-after video. You’ll start working towards clearer, more confident communication. The coach will assess your skills, discuss your strengths and weaknesses, and recommend a tailored course plan to help you reach your goals, whether that’s in 5, 10, or 15 sessions.

How quickly will I see an improvement? v

Most clients notice an immediate improvement after the Taster Session, where you’ll record a before-and-after to see the changes. Your communication journey with LSW involves four learning stages:

  • Unconscious incompetence
  • Conscious incompetence
  • Conscious competence
  • Unconscious competence

By the end of your course, aim for conscious competence, where you can use new skills with focus. Eventually, these skills become second nature, like driving. After mastering one aspect, you can tackle other communication skills, such as handling spontaneous questions. Your journey continues beyond the course, with access to discounted sessions as part of the LSW family.

Meeting once a week for eight intensive lessons   this playwriting course is an exciting opportunity to work with an established playwright to explore the fundamentals of writing a play.

By the end of the course you will have the tools you need to continue on your playwriting journey and have ideas for your plot, a developed breakdown of your characters and a fully written and analysed first scene. You will also be introduced to the skills involved in redrafting your script and working with notes.  In the final lesson, you will see your scene acted out by actors on one of our parallel courses.

  • creating a structured plot
  • developing a character

  • writing effective dialogue
  • finding and nurturing your voice as a writer
  • how to submit work to theatre companies and publishers

If you go on to complete your play in your own time once the course has been completed, for an additional fee, you can submit your completed play to the tutor for written feedback.

Alternatively you may wish to continue on to  Playwriting: Intermediate  where you can return to further your development of your play and take the next steps towards completing your script under the guidance of the tutor.

What our students say

“For anyone who is in the process of writing a play, or even just has a seed of an idea - this course will help break down all the essential elements you need to consider. I have gone from feeling a sense of overwhelm to feeling like I now have the tools I need to develop my play into something engaging and workable. Thank you!”

Suzie, Spring 2024

“This course unlocked the “thing” that was holding me back from putting my ideas onto the page. I shared my first piece of dramatic writing in a supportive environment. The course leader’s knowledge was exceptional. He cultivated an environment that engaged my curiosity about unknown things, and reframed my perspective on known things. I am excited for the Intermediate Course now.”

Cat, Spring 2024
