Ten takeaways from Goodell’s Harvard speech
NFL football commissioner Roger Goodell delivers a Dean s Distinguished Lecture at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, where he discussed some of the rules that have been created to limit concussions in the game of football. Goodell said the league will do what it needs to do to protect the safety of its 1,800 players. (AP Photo/Elise Amendola)
On Thursday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell delivered a speech at the Harvard School of Public Health regarding the league’s role in making the game of football safer. If you’re inclined to read the full text, you can .
Or you can review the shorthand version. The one with numbers and short sentences and maybe a typo or too.
So without further adieu, here’s the list of 10 things that caught our (or at least my) attention while reviewing the transcript.
1. Goodell said that the biggest challenge the NFL faces is "[c]hanging the culture in a way that reduces the injury risk to the maximum extent possible -- especially the risk of head injury.” Contained within that challenge is the difficult balance between safety and enjoyment, both for fans and players. At some point, the game can be made no safer without changing it in a way that makes people less interested in watching or participating. The NFL needs to constantly find that balance, and stay on the right side of it.
2. Goodell emphasized that the league’s responsibility extends to both former and future players, and it encompasses “the quality of playing fields, the equipment players wear, rules to protect them from unnecessary risk, programs to support their lives off the field, and post-career benefits.” As to the quality of playing field, the NFL is failing, in several specific locations.
3. In a respectful and tactful way, Goodell pointed out that concussions aren’t unique to football. Soccer, rugby, equestrian competitions, Australian Rules Football, and other sports present risks of concussions and other serious injuries. (Beyond sports, there are plenty of risks people take without being paid to take them. From jumping out of planes to climbing rock walls to riding motorcycles without helmets, people are wired to assume risks in order to do things they enjoy doing.)
4. For those who are suggesting that removing helmets will make the game safer by making players less reckless, keep in mind this fact that Goodell shared in his speech: In 1904, 18 college football players died, primarily from skull fractures. While no helmet can prevent a concussion, helmets prevent fractured skulls.
5. Goodell’s assertion that "[m]edical decisions override everything else” is not yet accurate at the NFL level. The NFL doesn’t insist on the removal from action of any player who may have sustained a concussion, presumably due to the competitive disadvantage that comes from, for example, taking a player off the field for 10 minutes to be screened for a concussion he doesn’t have. A hair-trigger approach that would compel a concussion exam for any player whose head hits the ground or who takes a blow to the head would also expand the bounty-style motivation inherent to the game, giving defensive players extra incentive to find ways to hit key offensive players in the head. Even if it doesn’t force them out of the rest of the game, it could keep them on the sidelines long enough to make a difference.
6. Goodell suggested that, at some point, there may be different helmets for different positions, based on the type of helmet that can best protect a player based on what he does on the field.
7. Goodell hinted at further possible changes to the kickoff, from eliminating it from the game to placing a weight limit on players who participate in kickoff coverage and kick returns.
8. Goodell pointed out that the Player Safety Panel has recommended that the Competition Committee “carefully review the rules on all blocks below the waist.” This acknowledges the concern from players that the NFL cares more about brains than ACLs. Concussions subside; careers can end with a serious knee injury.
9. Goodell said the NFL is testing sensors in helmets and shoulder pads that will reveal the impact of a hit. That data could be used to create an objective test for determining which players need to be checked for concussions.
10. The biggest challenge remains changing the sport’s “play-through-it” culture. Goodell shared a story regarding a 15-year-old field hockey player who said she had hit her head on the turf, blacked out, and didn’t tell anyone because she didn’t want to exit the game. The next day, she was diagnosed with a concussion. “It’s the warrior mentality,” Goodell said, “in a 15-year-old girl. This is unfortunate, but we are working with players, team doctors and coaches to change that culture. It is changing, but it will take more time, resolve, patience, and determination.”
It also requires common sense. At the NFL level, players know that, if they can’t play, they eventually won’t have jobs. Unless the NFL is willing to create salary-cap and roster exemptions for players with concussions, players will be inclined to choose short-term employment over long-term health consequences. And so they’ll continue to hide concussions.
In the end, that’s the toughest balance the NFL has to strike. How do you protect a football player from himself? At a certain point, the football player (especially once he becomes an adult) should be permitted to consciously assume all risks associated with playing football.

Some NFL fans see disparities in its responses to Harrison Butker and Colin Kaepernick

Harrison Butker’s controversial commencement speech — and the reaction to it — continue to dominate conversation off the field, with key figures in the NFL weighing in publicly for the first time this week.
The Kansas City Chiefs kicker stirred up a culture war skirmish with his remarks at Benedictine College earlier this month, in which he denounced abortion rights, Pride Month, COVID-19 lockdowns, “dangerous gender ideologies” and “the tyranny of diversity, equity and inclusion,” while also encouraging female graduates to embrace the “vocation” of homemaker, all in 20 minutes.
The speech, which has since racked up nearly 2 million views on YouTube , resonated with some football fans and conservative public figures, including Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley . Online sales of Butker's jersey spiked, becoming the Chiefs' best-seller .
The NFL responds after a player urges female college graduates to become homemakers
But the speech has drawn widespread criticism from many corners of the internet, including some current and former students of the Catholic liberal arts college, an order of affiliated nuns , Kansas City officials and fans of Taylor Swift, whom Butker quoted in the speech as “my teammate’s girlfriend .”
The NFL distanced itself from Butker’s comments in a brief statement last week, saying he made them “in his personal capacity” and “his views are not those of the NFL as an organization.”
“The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger,” it added.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell echoed that idea while speaking to reporters on Wednesday.
“We have over 3,000 players,” Goodell said, according to Yahoo Sports and the Associated Press . “We have executives around the league that have a diversity of opinions and thoughts just like America does. I think that’s something that we treasure, and that’s part of, I think, ultimately what makes us as a society better.”
But some social media users were quick to contrast Goodell’s comments with his reaction to another high-profile controversy involving a football player exercising his right to self-expression: that of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick .
When it comes to players’ self-expression, some see a double standard
Kaepernick, who is biracial, began sitting on the bench and subsequently kneeling during the playing of the national anthem in the 2016 preseason to protest what he called “the injustices that are happening in America.”
The actions prompted criticism from many — including then-candidate Donald Trump — who in August 2016 accused him of being anti-American.
Goodell made a similar critique of Kaepernick’s protest.
“I think it's important if they see things they want to change in society, and clearly we have things that can get better in society, and we should get better,” Goodell said in his first public comments on the protest in September 2016. “But we have to choose respectful ways of doing that so that we can achieve the outcomes we ultimately want and do it with the values and ideals that make our country great."
Kaepernick continued to kneel during the anthem for the rest of the season, inspiring some other players to do the same.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell: 'I Got It Wrong'
The following year, as the number of players kneeling — and the backlash to them — grew, Goodell told NFL teams in a memo that “everyone should stand” during the national anthem.
“The controversy over the Anthem is a barrier to having honest conversations and making real progress on the underlying issues,” he wrote. “We need to move past this controversy, and we want to do that together with our players."
Kaepernick opted out of his contract with the 49ers in the spring of 2017 but wasn’t signed by any NFL team afterward, which led his supporters to accuse league owners of freezing him out because of his political beliefs . Kaepernick alleged the same in a grievance filed against the NFL later that year, which he withdrew after settling in 2019.
He hasn’t played professionally since but has continued his career as a civil rights activist and author.
In June 2020, as protests against racial injustice and police brutality rocked the U.S., and after players called on the NFL to speak out, Goodell released a video statement condemning racism and acknowledging the league’s shortcomings in that area.
“We, the National Football League admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest,” he said, without naming Kaepernick.
Why Quarterback Colin Kaepernick Remains Unsigned
Goodell doubled down in a series of remarks that summer, including encouraging an NFL team to sign Kaepernick as a free agent and publicly apologizing.
“I wished we had listened earlier, Kaep, to what you were kneeling about and what you were trying to bring attention to,” he said.
On Wednesday, X (formerly Twitter) users and op-ed writers called Goodell’s comments hypocritical and wondered aloud what Kaepernick thinks of them. Some acknowledged that their situations differ, since Kaepernick protested in uniform during games while Butker made his speech off the field.
Kaepernick hasn’t commented publicly on Butker’s speech or Goodell’s response.
Last week, as controversy over Butker’s comments brewed, The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg said Butker and Kaepernick deserve equal respect for expressing their views.
“These are his beliefs and he's welcome to them,” she said of Butker. “I don't have to believe them, I don't have to accept them, the ladies that were sitting in that audience don't have to accept them.
"The same way we want respect when Colin Kaepernick takes a knee, we want to give respect to people whose ideas are different from ours because the man who says he wants to be president … he says the way to act is to take away people's right to say how they feel. We don't want to be that, we don't want to be those people."
Some Chiefs leaders have also spoken up for Butker
More members of the Chiefs acknowledged the controversy on Wednesday, coming to Butker’s defense.
Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes told reporters, “There are certain things that he said that I don’t necessarily agree with but I understand … he’s trying to do whatever he can to lead people in the right direction.”
He added that he’s known Butker for seven years and considers him a good person.
Super Bowl 2024
The swift-kelce romance sounds like a movie. but the nfl swears it wasn't scripted.
“I judge him by the character that he shows every single day,” he said. “That’s someone who cares about the people around him, cares about his family and wants to make a good impact in society.”
Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid also addressed the response to the speech, though stayed away from its contents. He said he hadn’t talked to Butker about it because “I didn’t think we needed to.”
“We're a microcosm of life,” he said of the team. “Everybody is from different areas, different religions, different races, and so, we all get along, we all respect each other's opinions and not necessarily do we go by those, but we respect everybody to have a voice. … My wish is that everybody could kind of follow that."
Correction May 25, 2024
A previous version of this story said that while he was president, Donald Trump called Colin Kaepernick anti-American. Trump’s comments came in August 2016, while he was a presidential candidate. The story has been updated to clarify the timeline of events.

Roger Goodell just addressed Harrison Butker 's controversial commencement speech ... and he didn't take a stance on it one way or the other, opting instead to simply praise the NFL's "diversity of opinions."
The Chiefs kicker's polarizing Benedictine College talk came up at the end of Goodell's chat with media members on Wednesday at the Spring League Meeting in Nashville ... when a reporter wondered if the NFL's commissioner had further thoughts on the matter.
Many, of course, had hoped Goodell would admonish Butker -- after critics called the KC star's words anti-gay and misogynistic.
But, Goodell kept things short and sweet with his answer ... replying only, "We have over 3,000 players. We have executives around the league. They have a diversity of opinions and thoughts just like America does. I think that's something that we treasure and that's part of, I think, ultimately, what makes us as a society better."
He then stated the league isn't "going to go much beyond" a statement that NFL Chief Diversity Officer Jonathan Beane issued last week ... which said, "[Butker's] views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger."

For his part, Butker -- who did participate in Chiefs organized team activities Wednesday morning -- has yet to speak publicly further in wake of all the backlash he received from the speech .

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell shares thoughts on speech by Chiefs’ Harrison Butker
Chiefs coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes weren’t the only ones asked Wednesday about kicker Harrison Butker’s viral commencement speech at Benedictine College.
The NFL wrapped up its spring meetings in Nashville with commissioner Roger Goodell holding a news conference. The last question for Goodell was about Butker’s speech.
“Listen, we have over 3,000 players . We have executives around the league,” Goodell said. “They have a diversity of opinions and thoughts just like America does. I think that’s something we treasure and that’s part of I think what ultimately makes us as a society better. But we are not going to go much beyond that statement we made last week.”
Jonathan Beane, the NFL’s senior vice president, chief diversity and inclusion officer, said last week that Butker’s “views are not those of the NFL as an organization.”
An 18-game schedule
Goodell also was asked about the possibility of the NFL expanding to an 18-game season. He said it is something the league is considering but said there are three things the NFL must consider before making that change.
“The key thing for us is looking at making sure we continue to do the things that make our game safer,” Goodell said. “So we want to make sure that hits the first boundary. Seventeen games is a long season, so we want to make sure we look at that and make sure that we continue the safety efforts.”
Goodell said the NFL also would work with the players’ association before adding a regular-season game while taking away a preseason contest.
“We would reach an agreement with them if we’re going to proceed on that,” Goodell said. “But also, third, and this is not necessarily in order, is the quality of our game. We would do it in the context of reducing the number of preseason games. We think that’s a good trade, less preseason games and more regular-season games. I think most anybody would think that was beneficial. But again those other two factors are really important.”

Harrison Butker's commencement speech brought its fair share of both praise and criticism.
The Kansas City Chiefs kicker encouraged women graduates to embrace their "vocation" as a "homemaker" and criticized the LGBTQ community and President Biden for his stance on abortion.
In the speech, Butker went after President Biden while adding, "things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for the degenerate cultural values and media all stem from pervasiveness of disorder."

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, though, took a different route, praising the country for its ability to give its citizens freedom of speech.
"We have over 3,000 players. ... They have a diversity of opinions & thoughts just like America does. I think that's something that we treasure & that's part of ultimately what makes us as a society better," Goodell said on Wednesday, via Yahoo Sports .
Goodell's comments echoed the sentiments of Butker's quarterback and coach, Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid.
"What makes the locker room so cool is you’re able to have those discussions and become better and make those decisions for yourself," Mahomes, the reigning Super Bowl MVP, told reporters Wednesday. "Even though there’s vast differences as far as those speeches happening at the same time, you get to talk to guys and get knowledge, and you make your own decisions at the end of the day.

"That’s what makes this country so great is that you’re able to get as much knowledge as you can, and then you make your own decisions."
Reid added, "Everybody’s got their own opinion, and that’s what’s so great about this country. You can share those things, and you can work through it. That’s what guys do."
Mahomes prefaced these comments by talking about Butker as the person he has come to know over the past seven seasons with the Chiefs. He also admitted he had a difference of opinion about some comments from Butker’s speech.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Comments on Harrison Butker's Controversial Speech
Josh wilson | may 22, 2024.
- Kansas City Chiefs
After a league statement, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell gave thoughts of his own on a controversial set of comments from Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker.
Goodell had this to say , according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero:
"We have over 3,000 players. We have executives around the league. They have diversity of opinions and thoughts just like America does. That’s something we treasure."
Butker delivered a commencement speech at Benedictine College earlier this month. Aspects of his speech touched on sensitive topics, including a view on gender roles and women empowerment that drew a negative response from the public.
Here is an excerpt from his speech:
"For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you. How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world."
The league's previous statement acknowledged that Butker delievered the speech in a "personal" capacity, and emphasized its commitment to inclusion.
The sisters of Mount St. Scholastica, an order of nuns associated with Benedictine College have denounced Butker's words.
Butker also gave a commencement address at his alma mater, Georgia Tech, in 2023.
