I don't make my way to Tempe much these days, but on a friend's recommendation I headed out to try Experiment Coffee and Pastry . And, boy, am I glad I made the trek.

State of play: Located near Southern Avenue and Hardy Drive, Experiment has daily lunch specials, and the shrimp po' boy sounded pretty tasty. But I was there for the baked goods — after all, when you go for the first time to a place that specializes in fancy pastries, how can you order anything else?

What I ordered: I grabbed a couple pastries for myself and one for my wife so I could try as much of the menu as possible.

• For myself, I got a lemon meringue croissant and a jalapeño popper croissant. And for my wife, I brought home a kouign-amann, which features croissant-like layered dough with butter and caramelized sugar.

The verdict: Incredible. The lemon meringue pastry was like a slice of pie converted into a croissant, and it's as good as it sounds.

• The jalapeño popper croissant was full of cream-cheesy, spicy goodness, and the green coloring gave it an aesthetic to match the taste.
• I'd never heard of kouign-amann, but, wow, it was outstanding.

What's next: It was tough choosing just a few, so I may have to make a trip back to Tempe soon to sample more of their wares.

This place is amazing! We tried the espresso croissant, the mixed berry muffin, and the cream cheese Danish. I would say it’s on par with Tartine bakery! Perfection. 😊

Hidden treasure💘 small bakery/cafe & they served lunch too. Staff r super friendly. Didn’t find everything I want but it seemed that u could preorder using Toast app, I’ll do it next time. Definitely will revisit again. So far, I tried plain Croissant، chocolate & espresso Croissant. All were amazing. They’re the best in town regarding pastry! I also tried their cinnamon roll. Their coffee is great too.

First time there, just might be our favorite new spot. The iced coffees and pantries were delicious. The pastries are made in house and they use ghirardelli chocolates in their coffees. They also have lunch specials daily from 11-1:30pm I believe. We're looking forward to returning for lunch, all the specials looked delicious.

Wow! There is a wide selection of coffee that is good. The pastries are out of this world. They make one breakfast and one lunch sandwich a day and a wide range of pastries and baked goods. This is a professional commercial bakery that opened up a little store front during the pandemic. They really are a hidden gem.

This place is incredible. The pastries are some of the highest quality I have ever eaten, with amazing variety. Everything is made fresh every morning and it shows. I brought home an espresso croissant, apricot croissant, chocolate croissant, and cheese danish with raspberries-- all mind-blowingly good! Their cold brew and chai tea latte was excellent as well. So happy to have a delicious pasty place in Tempe now!
